Unread post Hosting Tutorial?
I've just re-discovered TradeWars from back in the BBS days 15 years ago.

I'm trying to get it set up on my server ... is there a tutorial that takes you from install to your first hosted game?

If there's not a tutorial, I can post my questions here, but I don't want bother the group with answers I can find for myself.

Thanks so much

most everyone in the Hosting Q&A Forum can help you. As far as i know there is not a tutorial a lot of the stuff is self explanitory the most common issues are the individual routers and firewalls.....Please Bother us with Questions about Hosting..Most people happy to answer....Maybe it will keep them out of the Smack forum.. 8)

Use an IP forwarding service. They are free and eliminate the problems of a dynamic IP address changing on you in the middle of a game. If you have a Dlink system, you have one already at dlinkddns.com I believe is the addy. I'm not at home so I can't check for sure.

A lot of people think that their internal network address is the one that people will connect to (192.168.x.xxx where x is a number). That is not external and no one except those on the internal network will connect.

If you are opeing up your TWGS for everyone, and not a small group of friends I would suggest that you post what game(s) you are going to play in. Most people do not like to play against the server sysOp for obvious reasons.

We have a tutorial on the TWGS. You can access it at:

http://www.outpost-4.com/tradewars and click on TWGS-Library on the right nav panel.

I don't have the tutorial "Creating edits" yet, but I am working on the content. I just returned home so it should be up this weekend.

Yes! Thank you for the tutorial.

I finally found my error ... basically, I could connect to the server, but no games were available even though the server indicated that one game was running.

My error: I had to push the BigBang. With that done, everything is working perfect.

Good job. As I said before, I am working on more content to add to the TWGS section. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions and I'm happy to help any way I can. Or other SysOp's here that run public/private servers are able to assist.
