Thinking of bringing back server if...
All,
I at one point a couple of years ago I ran a custom game on roguegalaxy that was intended to be relatively long term (hopefully run 2-3 months) and had custom ships that you could customize yourself with a web based interface (this idea was based on a more manual process that effigygames used to run). You would then "Order" the ships you designed and if you still owned your shipyard planet once the construction of your ship was complete it would automatically be delivered to you by my scripted ship generator.
A few of you were gracious enough to give me some input during that time to make the game more balanced and attract more players. Taking advice from some of the other forum posts, I am thinking about bringing this game back and only running this one game and doing it as well as I can. If it is not your cup of tea, then there are plenty of games/servers out there right?
My reason for posting today is to see if there is even any interest out there for this type of thing. I have a web page yo can look at to get a feel for the ship designer/ordering interface. I also have a companion web page ready that helps you keep track of your ships (which is useful in long running games with large fleets).
My amount of free time/priorities has always been the problem. My kids are now a little older though and I finally have some more time to perfect this project. Again, if anyone cares!
I do have a goal also of packaging my scripts and code up so other sysops can set this type of thing up (then I can play it too!).
Let me know what you all think.

I don't play much anymore, but I do host, and would be very excited to host your game on my site. Some time ago I found a website that had custom ships for TWGS but the project had closed and I was never able to make contact with those who had posted it. I'm not sure if it was you or not, but I'd love to put this style of game on my site.

It was a great design. I'd be happy to see it again or have the ability to set it up.

Re: Thinking of bringing back server if...
I just found and brought back to life a rudimentary guide I put together (just a screenshot album really) for this setup. I have done more work since these screenshots, the best enhancement not shown here was the Order Status page which showed progress bars on each ship order. When all of this is functioning it does begin to feel as if you are placing an order to a vendor for new ships and then checking estimated delivery Here is the link... http://www.rgstats.com/jsp/rgtwguide/RG ... Guide.htmlThis week I am working on bringing up my new server and getting all of these scripts back in place. I am going to try using ubuntu this time instead of XP pro. I guess I just like to make problems for myself.

I did find one more recent screenshot too, just to show a little more of how it comes together... http://www.rgstats.com/jsp/rgtwguide/im ... epage1.png

I knew you had the ship design orderer, but what you have accomplished with viewing your assets is amazing. I would be curious about what it would take to set something similar up for my board, since I have lots of well populated long term games...

Indeed it is a good concept RGOrion. Glad to see your return. It would be nice to have that on our sites More interaction is always better.

Re: Thinking of bringing back server if...
Thanks guys - keep in mind the data is only refreshed hourly - anymore often then that and the processing time is too big of a pull on the server. My beta game was a 7500 sector universe - a 20000 may be much worse. This is the type of stuff I look forward to working out though.

Re: Thinking of bringing back server if...
The Rogue Galaxy twgs is back online and running in ubuntu. V'Ger and/or Thrawn, would you guys mind joining the temporary Game A just to get some ping or proping info for me (maybe run it a few times several minutes apart)? I am curious to see how good/bad the connection speed may be. My server is located Northwest of Chicago, IL. Please let me know where you are testing from too.
Thanks guys.
Server info in my sig of course...

I do not have TW access at work, but I will be happy to get some pings for you this evening.

Singularity wrote: You got it working on Ubuntu? Hrmm... nice. Indeed - it makes things like automatic restart of TWGS (on system reboot) and no-ip dynamic dns management much easier. Not to mention this was all of my old (but still fast) components. My old gaming motherboard, power supply, memory, and video card were placed into a $20 (+ shipping) newegg.com case. It feels like I built a TWGS server for under $30 (even though I really spent money upgrading my gaming PC a few months ago). -- and thanks V'Ger sounds good
