Telnet shuts off TWGS
Wanting to run a server for some locals. Tried to get running on two machines; a Windows Server 2008 and on a Windows XP. Both let you install but when you start Telnet the TWGS service shuts down. Windows 7 and even 8 take right off, so I'm not sure were the disconnect is with XP. Any help?

Re: Telnet shuts off TWGS
Maybe it's in your router settings. Make sure you open port 23 for the game and port 2003 for remote sysop, if you plan to use that function.
My router also has a configuration setting if you are gaming.

Re: Telnet shuts off TWGS
In Windows XP the telnet (server) access isn't availble by default. Search for it on the internet, there's plenty of sites that explain how to initialize telnet.

Turning on the Telnet is done, its to getting the two to work together. Port 23 is open as well.

Re: Telnet shuts off TWGS
Paladin, can you try running it as a normal app rather than a service, just to narrow down the issues? Running as a service always creates new issues because of OS security. Shut down the TWGS service and just run from the desktop icon and see if it handles things better.
What you're describing is new to me. It might be useful to set up a remote access with join.me so I can see this for myself. We can pick up in messages or email if we go that route.

Re: Telnet shuts off TWGS
Change the TWGS port to 2002, sounds like 23 might already be in use.

Re: Telnet shuts off TWGS
But that wouldn't cause TWGS to shut down, which is what it sounds like the op is suggesting. I can't think of anything that would, other than some kind of security software that identifies TWGS as malicious.

Yeah its really strange. We've decided to use a Vista machine and its working just fine. We were just curious if this had come up before. Thanks for all the help!

The trick to running twgs on a windows 7 box or windows server 2008 box is to install it in the root. There are all kinds of security issues that come up if you install it in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) I do all of my TWGS installs into C:\TW2002\TWGS so it is not affected by UAC H

Re: Telnet shuts off TWGS
What's odd is that XP is usually the one that works and Win 7 causes problems.
Well, what you're reporting is pretty rare, so I guess if it's working for you now, go with it.
Thanks for reporting.
