What I would like to know tho, if I was to host my game on Jumpgate, would there be a way I could incorporate the "Play!" link for my game that would in turn use the browser based client that TWGS has on their site? If it is an option, would I have to pay? Just thinking that using the browser based client may be easier than having to teach each of my friends how to use Putty... while I grew up on telnet, most people I know did not.

Thanks for being a very helpful community! :D

You're making the same assumption we all did when we saw "Jump Gate" and there is another current thread discussing what Daala and Thrawn have been able to accomplish on their own linking games together on their server.

But, "Jump Gate" in TWGS as it stands right now is simply you allowing your site to be listed on the EIS Museum list of active servers. http://wiki.classictw.com/index.php?title=Jumpgate

Currently under development is a flash client interface. As soon as I have time to make some adjustments to my router, I'll post a link to this interface.

Right now it will simply allow you to enter a game via a browser link, no need for a telnet program etc., and you can re-size the font, which is really cool! But, every trade, every movement still needs to be done manually. As far as I know, there aren't any "helpers" that work with the flash client, but JP has discussed building in some simple functions.

What I find exciting is this 25+ year old BBS text game is still under development, still being supported, and still just as much fun (an addictive) as it always was!

Too bad we can't say the same for other BBS text games like Major Mud, Farwest Trivia, etc. I miss those days.

Is it? Still being supported? Haven't heard nor seen hide of JP in months. Maybe you have some inside information that the rest of us don't.
If this is the case, then suggest to him that he continue work on version 1 and finish it before he does much more work on version 2.

Unfortunately version 1 has been abandoned , while version to is kinda on hold.
John has been working on his flash interface , which can be used on my server (v2.25 beta) .. my router has been set to use it.

So if Cruncher is ready to release that info on how to connect , you can try it out on my server .. but be warned .. it is not very impressive.

Heads up on TWGS v2 .. it may someday get finished if we can get J.P. to fix what has already been reported.

I for one would like to see more than one fix every year or two.
Like most scripters , when you write something and find a bug , you fix it right way and move on .. not procrastinate and wait till you have a list of 10 things to fix before beginning to fix things.

But that is just my take and not meant as a flame .. just telling things as they are and trying to keep players informed that TWGS is not dead.

It has just a little more functionality than the Java client I used when I first returned on Ice-9.

When I have time, I'm going to try to allow the flash client users access to a closed game just for them. They will be able to access all games, but giving them one closed game would be more fair.

I had suggested to JP that we use the TWIP to filter flash access players from telent players. I don't know if that's possible or not yet.

You would most likely need a Flash Policy server to validate the flash access.

This is what I was trying to tell him .. It would be only proper for those players to have games that only they can access.
A twx player will run circles around them , so therefore flash users should have there own games.

Then J.P. can be free to program his interface for that type of game.
Commuters using ipads or iphones can play in the safety of their own private not closed games .. but just for flash players.

I could be wrong but didn't IOS6 & Android 4+ drop flash from their platforms? Sorry for adding to the derail :)

Yeah, what Daala said, that's what I was thinking. Flash users can access all games, but only flash users can access games specifically for them. I don't want to keep flash users out of any game, but we will have to keep telnet players out of games set-up for flash client users only.

You're right, they did. I just google'd it.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/260901/a ... _gone.html

But reading further, just seems the whole thing is morphing with HTML5 and JavaScript. It's hard to say what's going where, but the article did say that there are 100M users with flash on their android devices.

Ah.. here it is. Adobe AIR https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... .adobe.air

The downside is that there is currently no method to block a flash user from accessing any game in the TWGS unless John has looked at it and sees it viable to implement (which at the time we looked at something similar it was not).

In my opinion, flash should be treated just like the Java login via web browser (like how we and other sysops use to provide). It gives a player a method to login and check what they need to, but is not necessarily a helper to play.

There is a promising HTML 5 telnet/ssh client that could be applicable: http://liftoffsoftware.com/Products/GateOne

Since the actual telnet client seems to be server-side, you could throw in a server-side helper/script runner and build a nice client UI out of just HTML.

I don't want to block flash users from any game, but I do want them to have access to a game that blocks telnet/helper users. TWGS already has the capability to set-up passwords for games, so players can have access to their own private game. My idea was for TWGS to have a toggle, game open to all, or game open to only flash client.

Akin to a password or different port access.

I think eventually JP wants to have some scripts built into the flash client, a mini-helper of sorts just to take away some of the truly mundane operations.

Let me use FlashTerm as an example. The flash plug-in is simply opening a socket connection on that port it is configured for. So using your example, the only way the TWGS can distinguish between telnet or flash is to allow two ports (other than admin/regular--> you could use the same idea similar to how some BBS software allow telnet/rlogin). The TWGS would have to have an option to specify what port for telnet and what port for flash. I do not see how the TWGS will distinguish between the two connections- flash or telnet.

In the current beta on the config screen I can set the port for the flash client. Defaults to port 80 now. But that's not enough, once word gets out which port to connect to, sharks in the guppy tank!
