Unread post Big bang settings
i was thinking about banging a user defined settings on my server, and was not sure where to post such a post. so i will do it here.

when ever i bang a new game i get atleast one of the settings screwed up that people request to be changed. so i figured... why not ask what the people want in a game so they will play and keep playing. before i bang the game.

so that is what i am doing now.

what settings do you want?

this is not going to be an unlimited turns game so don't ask on that one.

but all the other settings. what would you like to see changed from the orignal settings?

the first game with user settings will be a Non-Gold setup.

my current game slot A will change till i get the settings tweaked. but game slot M will be the user setting game when i am done.

thank you for your time.

The default settings I always change, no matter what the rest of the edit is going to look like:

Ship delay = default is 2 s, I almost always change to constant 250 ms
Universe Size = default is only 1k
Port Regen = default is 7 days

The rest are up to you and the type of game you're hoping players will enjoy.

[edit]

Ah.. big bang settings was the question, the only thing I always do on big bang is to select a random seed to bang with. The rest of the settings depend on what type of game you're creating.

So, I guess to better answer your question, what type of game are you trying for? What type of players do you hope to attract?

i guess it's a tossup between those who stay online and wrack up so many points that they can only be beat if your using a bot to play and those who play in their spare time.

i want the latter. but i also want a community of players. (ie. more than a handful)

but it seems i can never balance the settings, to keep those who play with a helper away and to attract those who just want a place to hangout online.

that is why i am asking the community. before banging game "M"

Well, the players in this community mostly play connected 24/7 running Mombot. Some here are requesting an unlimited turn game, so if you ask this community, that is what they are asking for.

I also have a Facebook page for my server, where the more casual players contact me. Those are the players who enjoy low turn time limit games.

You can have a mix for both types of players. Ice-9 does that, or did.

Explore some of the game TWA's available here for download and try a few out until you come across one that your players enjoy. And give it time.

i guess, my vision, of the good old days where you played for the "fun" of it is gone. i am going to rebang game a in the following days with settings that nobody will like.

if you cannot please who you want, make sure nobody else is pleased.

i may be a little anti social but i find that is easier than trying to please everyone.

so why bother?

i paid for the game. i am going to play "God" in my little universe. and if they don't like it. then they know how i feel.

hi Slother3x
don't be disappointed, there is plenty of game variations that appeal to a majority of players.
i tried playing your game A when it was banged, the 250 turns was far too few. Players like to pull ahead a lot faster so they can get to the best part of tradewars... strategy, hunting, attacking. I left that game for a while and went back in about a week later... boom 10k turns... Darn i got whiplash... too many turns (10k might as well be unlimited to a good player).
The next issue was speed... you had the game strapped down at 14.4 modem speed... man that was punishing... and all the delays... well brother, nobody plays at that speed. Your talking about 1993.
We want a fast paced game! Our equipment, software, and internet connection is the BOMB!!! not a finger pop.
When i look for a game i select one that:
1.) has 7:1 or better (sectors:turns) (3k turns in 20k universe)
2.) number of corpies not greater than 3 (one solo game as well)
3.) well balanced ships for red and blue
4.) plenty of colonists (so the blue game does not stagger)
5.) mbbs with mega rob (as in pirates final)
6.) planets that max out in 10 days or less (at least one weak fast build)
7.) experienced players on the board that are not mouthy nor bullies
8.) no delays in the settings
9.) i prefer large universes (allows time to grow before discovery)
10.) sufficient one ways, tunnels and dead ends for home bases
11.) i positively abhore unlim. games especially with 4 day truce (joke!)
12.) at least 3 games to chose from (classic, pirates and ?)
13.) i like to see noobs playing (i help rig their software and offer strategy)
14.) aliens that don't rule the game (i like the player interaction)
15.) no photons fired from fedspace (kills noobs every time and some reds)
16.) back to turns... 3k is huge, suitable in solo games or small corps.
the larger the corp. membership... the fewer the turns
17.) time limits... assist new players... offline invasion, hitting figs +++

well, hope this helps, i would say i am a typical modern player, although i started playing in the early 90's.
ps: i am sure other players will offer suggestions, and as the sysop i encourage you to keep the games brisk/fast paced and engaging. You can have a ton of fun with loads of creativity.
One last piece of advice... rebang dead games. Players are always looking for that fresh start.
Good luck.

I agree with cc bee on most of that ...

I too like low turn games , about 5k or 2500 turns times 2 day banking.
in a 20k universe with lots of bubles and such.

Also no delays or just a long 3 sec delay for eprobing to force players to actually explore.

I like port regen at 200 and tera always producing so many colos that no one could possibly empty it.

And as a fellow sysop I'de suggest picking 5 or more differant edits and
run them , if one does not get many players , find another ..
The more games your server runs , the better chance you'll have players.

I pick one day a week to check my games (based on objectives .. like cap alien planets) to determine if its time for a rebang or to replace the game.

These are just a few suggestions how I run my server.
You as always are free to do it your way , and see how it goes.

Where are your posting your rules?

I recommend placing a beacon in sector one and stardock telling players there are special rules, and where they need to go to read the rules.

Micro has a good point.
i was the only player in game A after you rebanged your game.
you disconnected me when i did not respond to your hail.
geez slother3x, i was ztm'ing at the dock and my com window was closed.
i know your sensitive about AFK players, but you should have thought that one through.
That was a "knee jerk" reaction and not the way to welcome and encourage players to participate.
The only rules i saw was something about "no Bots Helpers" which led me to believe players could not bot other players (poorly explained).

The no bot rule .. does need to be expanded on .. a lot of my scripts are incorporated into what cold be considered a bot.

And for afk play .. I do stay online 24/7 , I mean .. when was the last time you were scared of hitting a fighter from a cloaked or offline player ?

Online players tend to win games.

So as your rules state , I can't play unless its ok to leave an afk script to answer hails on .. lol

Technically KeepAlive is an AFK script ;)

If you want to attrack players, offer some Games they 'will' play, as your Server proves stable and reliable, people will invariably check out the slow-pitch, Bot-non grata games you also host.

learning that the community on the offical Tradewars forum consist of people who don't actualy play Tradewars but play how can i win at tradewars with the least amount of input or least amount of interaction with the game, how can i play without actualy playing kind of attitude.

people of this forum play with their "wheel chairs" because they forgot how to walk.

according to my logfiles you self destructed shortly after my computer had a power failure. the dc was not intenional. but the hail just before it was.

i tried to post the rules in the same place i made the announcement about the game. but that lead to people either trying to get me to edit the rule make a game with the rule non existisant, change somthing about the game so breaking the rule is not as noticeable. or just ignoring the rule all togeather.

i could see people makeing a fuss if i started "charging" for the service. but last i remember i was offering access to my home computer and giving access to my bandwidth, for free. do i or do i not have a right to make the rules if i paid for twgs just so others could play for free?

Hey slother3x. Insulting players in the hosting Q&A? Nice to see the smack forum back. While we are smacking, I just wanted to let you know that insulting players that use scirpts and scripters probably won't get you any more players than you have right now. Good luck with that attitude.
