Unread post Quick question
I'm thinking about starting a new v1 server, I've downloaded the V1 TWGS if I wanted to get an address for my IP, how would that work? For example, instead of having people connect to 127.0.0.1 it would be www.galactictradewars.com - how would that work? I've never hosted my own server so please forgive me if this sounds like a noob question.

Because this is not my strong suit, I see that what I was looking for appears to be a dynamic dns host. Any tips on which ones to use, which free ones are any good?

I'm not an expert in web technology, but having done what you're talking about doing (with the current TWGS, at least), I can give you one solution.

One way to do it is to have a static IP and a registered domain name. I've heard something about dynamic DNS, but found it was easier for me to just pay for the domain name and Virtual Private Server.

Domain names are pretty cheap depending on what you get, and you can find ones for as low as $3 a year (I used godaddy). A domain name does nothing more than convert an IP address into something easier to remember. You don't TECHNICALLY need one. As long as your players don't mind typing the actual IP address instead of the words. In any case, it's pretty cheap to get a domain name.

In order to install TWGS on an web-hosted server, I had to purchase a VPS. If you're planning on running the TWGS on a home computer then you won't need a VPS. In the past you needed a static IP address but supposedly this new Dynamic DNS system solves that. I've seen a lot of recommendations for dyn.com, but I have no personal experience with it.

You can find my server at 166.62.32.246:23. Look forward to seeing you there!

(Still trying to get the domain name working right, but the IP address is solid!)

Always looking for feedback and improvement! Send me a PM with comments/suggestions, please!

Just in case anyone is ever looking for this solution, https://www.noip.com/ is the solution I am using. Your TWGS provides you with your inital IP, this resource is free and provides you the ability to use an address instead of IP for connection. I have it setup, will be putting up a server when I get my reg codes from JP
