I'm in the process of invading an enemy corp's sector and one of that corp was in it in a ship with 0 ftrs and full shields (why I don't know). I pinged him with 1 ftr to move him out so I could land on his planets then dropped mines in his sector as well as the sector he moved to. I then took 2 of his planets, both lev 6 and set the cannon to 100% sector blast, went to the sector beyond where this guy moved to and dropped ftrs so he couldn't flee that way then pinged him again with 1 ftr. He moved back into his sector but neither my mines or the planet I set the cannon to did anything to him. I even moved a lev 6 planet into the sector he'd move to and still nothing happened to him. My question then is this: Does he have to be IN the game physically in order for mines or cannons to hit him?

The simple answer is yes, with exception of being attacked by another player or alien while off line or getting blown up on a planet that was destroyed, there is no way to die while off line. I would have just capped his ship and killed his pod and been done with it.

If you would have laid a fig in the sector his ship would not have moved back. That is a good way to keep them in the sector with you. As far as having no figs, well my guess is he thought they would be more effective on the planet defending, which they would depending on the edits. But when you do that you camp out in the cit.

When your ship is pinged, it isn't treated as a sector entry event. Incidentally, you can work this in your favor if someone has cannons on. Get two ship in the sector, have a corpie get in one and part corp, then you start pinging them. The IG will hold them for 500 ore used, but the cannons won't fire.

Thanks for all the answers. Shorty, I really didn't want to kill him as to do so would have meant going evil, something I really didn't want to do. I just wanted his planets which I got <laughing>.

If the guy has no fighters, feel free to ping off most of his shields, then tow him into a minefield of your choice.

Actually- the shields go before the fighters do...
