I've recently gotten back to playing TW2002 after several years. I'd like to know if it'd be worth running my own TW servers for ppl to play on.. Is there a lack of good servers in the TW community? Or are there too many that it's hard to find a games with lots of people participating?

Everyone's got an opinion... share 'em with me! :)

The issue is making sure to have enough good games to cover the influx of players. Some games can be dominated early on by a player or players that know what they are doing. I would advise games with variety, unlimited, turns, hours those types of games. Give them a choice.

What I wanted to know was... is it worth starting up a new server or two? Is the TW universe already saturated w/servers? Are there a lack of servers with certain settings that everyone likes?

if you're just coming back into the groove of TW - might be best for u to roll around & play at the servers for a lil while to get a feel for the supply/demand ratio

def. appreciate ur willingness to put up a server - but as i said - get a feel for what its like to run a server & what edits are common (or what edits ud like to put in place) - b4 u jump headfirst into something that could become more of a time consuming labour than ur ready for - jus mah opinion nahmean heh

good luck an see u round,
peace

I ran a BBS in Japan (The Asylum BBS) for 2 1/2 years from 92 to 95.. TW was my fav game :) I'm familiar with the admin side of TW (if a bit rusty).

Yea, that's why I asked. Since I haven't been in the groove for a while, I wanted to get other's input. Guess I'll play for a while and see.. I think I'm gonna play on Strider's game when it comes up.

I've got a 1.2Gig TBird with 1.3Gigs of ram available... 512kb uploads.. I can probably get a server or two on that.

There seems to be a bunch of new servers being brought online this year [:)]
As more servers come up , players will have more choices to play.
With the system you discribed , you will defenitly be able to run a nice server.
If your looking into a BBS front end .. I'de suggest you check out a bunch of running servers , some have bbs front end others are twgs standalone.
Standalone seems faster to me , but others may disagree.

Before you drop lots of cash in a new server , jump on a few helpers to make your life nice when you play.
I'de suggest swath and twx , they make a nice combo with plenty of power .. once you have a bunch of scripts and macros setup.

hope this helps

Thanx for the suggestions. Yea, I've already purchased SWATH. I haven't tried TWX yet, but I hear good things. I'll probably check it out. I've been collecting scripts and script site links. Lots of good stuff out there. I hear all the reall GOOD scripts are kept as secret treasures though.. :)

One thing to consider is that players only have so much time to spend playing. There are tons of servers out there right now - perhaps in 6 months to a year there won't be. Use the time to explore servers and websites and see what you do like and you don't. I know my opinions and views changed a lot in year of playing, and it has helped me with my server a lot. Take the time to develop a unique game edit like Dungeons and Dragons or Gangsta Wars. Give players a reason to want to play on your server. Many new servers have less than a dozen players spread out over their various games.

As to BBS front ends... Stay away from WorldGroup. Expensive, and it does force the TWGS to be logged off for cleanup. In addition, if someone hangs it locks everyone out from logging in for 5 minutes. I run both of my TWGS' as standalones. Yes, you have some bugs that can be exploited in a standalone environment, but.. overall it is better for the players.

If and when you do decide to set up a server, don't play there. If you do, you open yourself up to being accused of cheating by every newbie out there. (Player blindwarps.. accuses sysop of cheating.. Player doesn't like the edits, turns game into opportunity to cuss out sysop at every turn ). The current TWGS is pretty stable and flexible, so it really is a much better piece of software than that vintage HVS POS you were used to. Be prepared for it to be a money-pit kind of hobby, and one that you rarely ever will be thanked for.

Would I change my mind on setting up not one but two? Nope.. been a sysop now for close to 3 years. I am used to the pages in the middle of the night, the curses, and the rare thanks. I try to keep my games fresh and creative.
