New.... Again
So I aint played since before automation. That makes me relearning everything from scratch again, and I wasn't no Game Master to begin with.
I got on the Ice9 server in the pirates game. Had another player gift me with a boatload of cash. Good thing to cause moving without scanning got my ship blew up in less than 10 turns. So couple days in and I got a corporation so I could get the flagship, blew it up twarping into spacedock, dropped some cash on a bounty, got commisioned, and obtained a ISS.
Now the game has been running 2xx days, and it seems everyother sector has a fig in it or a mine defeating my ether probes. Aint found a whole lot of good port pairs, most seem to be traded out, prolly by the big guys using the automation. Any tips on finding trading pairs?
Then after I looked around a lot and paid a buttload in tolls, I find a nice lil dead end. Great I think, I'll start a base here. So I launch a gentorp and get "not enough free matter". All the running around I've done and the only planet I know of is in sector 1, lol. Supposed to be 6000 ingame.
I got some helpers to assist, but swath is real limited it seems without buying it, and the trial mapper is next to useless. ATTAC seems to ok, but crashes fairly often, gets me a free memory error often, but the map works and on the few times I got hold of a good pair, the trader seemed good. Again, can't seem to find good pairs.
So any advice for finding pairs, or a planet, starting a planet with no free matter available, etc etc? I really would like to get into playin but aint into being frustrated at every turn because guys own every sector worth owning.
All help appreciated.

Too many questions to answer briefly, but I understand your frustration, it has been the matter of furious debate for almost a dozen years. Go here for a guide to returning players: http://www.navhaz.com/tutorials/Go here for very good info: http://tw-cabal.comThere are several gamesites that limit automation , Cruncher's is a notable one: cruncherstw.dyndns.org Basically however, you have limited choices. Pay swath, use third party scripts, write your own, or a combo. Automation has been around forever in TW. I started late '80's. Shortly later, started using Qmodem and twassist. Twassist free, great map, limited to 5K. Kokua also free, decent map. Last few years, many players have gone a bit overboard using scripts to kill baby seals. Ask if you want either Twassist or Kokua, or a free terminal pgm link

Re: New.... Again
A game that's over 200 days old is over and forgotten. Most games are over in a few days, if not hours. And the more turns a game has, the more it favors red over blue and the faster it's locked down and effectively closed to new players.

Re: New.... Again
I can look over my games, I may have one or two that could use a reset. When I reset I'll announce the reset here.
I run low turn, time limit games, and like Kav said, they have limitations to take the edge off the most aggressive automation.

Re: New.... Again
The players in the game I'm in have been very generous, And I am thankfull for that. The extra cash has made it easier to experiment and took the sting out of losing my first 4 ships.
Right now, under advice from a vet ingame, I am running a ZTM apparently so I am not stumbling around the unknown looking for things, and blowing up #5.
I am assuming this will make the CIM effective after it is finished. picking up a little more evry day!
VERY pleased with the vet players on Ice9 so far!
I appreciate that cruncher but I would hate to violate a rule playing with things I aint sure of yet. If you do reset I'll probably try it out though.

There are vets who frequent my server to help players like yourself too. Don't worry about blowing up ships, we all do. My first week back after 8 years away, I blew-up 3 ships!

Re: New.... Again
Ok so I kind of got myself into a pickle.
I got twx and was trying to figure it out, ease things a bit. So I got it all fired up and into game and tried out the world trade script. I got it running and wasn't very long before I had 500k in credits. Then I saw the "bad news", -10k alignment. I didn't really want to go evil, lol.
Someone pointed me to a sector with 7 alien ships and over 120k in figs, but that is obviously more than I can handle in my corp flagship with 3k or so in figs.
Sooooo, is there a good way to find and kill ferengi/aliens? How do I go about upgrading ports, as I read about that over attradewars.info/faq and can't seem to find out the actual procedure.
Oh and can I change the world trade script to pay off toll figs rather than kill them so I don't go neg align unwillingly again?

Talk to one of the more Evil players and ask him to allow you to attack his personal def figs to swing your alignment back to positive (blue). This site is everything you didn't know you wanted to know about TW! http://www.tw-cabal.com/formulas.html

Re: New.... Again
If you plan out how to leave your assets behind or are not far enough in to care, you can do one of these: self-destruct or get killed attempting to enter the underground. Self destructing will remove a portion of the negative alignment and getting killed trying to get into the underground (U at the stardock) will reset your to 0 alignment.

You should be able to find it in your trade wars main command menu; try hitting 'O' from the command menu while sitting in a sector with a port (classes 1-8). But I don't think this is a very efficient way of increasing your alignment, unless you needed to upgrade those ports anyway. Papa_Kurr wrote: Oh and can I change the world trade script to pay off toll figs rather than kill them so I don't go neg align unwillingly again? Yeah, if you're using 2_WorldTrade by Remco Mulder, it should be somewhere in the menu that comes up when you run the script.
