Recently a player was banned from a tournament for breaking this rule:

Quote:
5. Player Conduct

a. All players will refrain from offensive language regarding race, sex, or religion in any form of in-game communication and on the TeamSpeak server. This also applies to player handles, and the naming of any in-game object such as beacons, ships, planets, ports, etc…

The player was warned that he would be banned from the server after he posted a graphic ascii on fedcomm of a guy bent over with his Butt spread and male genitalia handing down from his open Butthole.

The player was then banned when he posted a penis on some planets at star dock.

So all he had to do was apologize, and he would have been let back in the game, but he chose not to do this.

The real question has nothing to do with what a player does in a game. Individual sysops are free to regulate their servers as they choose.

The real question is, what is and should the role of a sysop be in a tournament. Obviously we need sysops to host tournaments and those that graciously offer to do so should be appreciated.

However, in agreeing to host a tournament, sysops have traditionally taken a hands-off role, allowing the players to play the game and only intervening when there is cheating or some other clearly unfair tactic being used that affects the outcome of the game.

In my view, a sysop is a facilitator. That's how I run my server, and how I expect others to run theirs. Others may see it differently, and they have a right to run their server how they choose.

However, when you agree to host a tournament, you are taking on a responsibility to run that tournament in a way consistent with the expectations of the community and the players, and not to enforce your personal moral code in doing so.

Anyone who's played tournaments in this game in the past is well aware that far worse things have been said and done countless times when there were more players around.

Also, there is a difference between personal insults done out of anger, and joking around with other players. In this case, there was some trash talk, and some art being drawn as a joke. How exactly does this impact the fairness or outcome of the tournament? Certainly far less than banning the CEO of one of two teams in said tournament.

I maintain that a sysop can choose to run his server however he wants, HOWEVER, during a tournament, the players should be allowed to determine the outcome, not an overzealous sysop. If you don't like that, don't host tournaments. It's pretty simple.

Also, for the record, I did not violate this rule. I did not use any offensive language that referenced race, sex or religion at any time. Nor did I insult anyone's race, sex or religion in anything I drew or posted on fedcom.

1. What you posted would not be allowed in an R rated movie. I think that qualifies as being offensive to just about any if not all religions.

2. You were warned that you would be banned from the game and you decided to repeat your offense.

3. I am still waiting for your apology.

As a sysop and a long time player I see both sides of the coin here.

Sysop: On my server I am god, judge, jury, and executioner. If I tell you to jump, you better ask how high while you are in the air. Exaggeration there but you get my point. If I post a rule about something, proceed to warn them, they do something even close to what I was warning them about, I would ban them as well.

Player: This was a tournament game and as mentioned, in previous tournament unless a rule was specific to the letter, the player did not break a rule unless they did that. Tournaments often get heated and we being human are prone to make mistakes and rash judgment calls. There should be some give / play here.

I was in the game and did not see what happen. From my understanding the individual was warned multiple times. The "letter" of the law may not have been broken but if a warning was issued, the player should at that point understand. If they do not they should ask the question. While I did not want the game to go down like that and win under "suspect" circumstances, the sysop can make enforce any rule he / she see's fit to enforce and I do not fault the sysop in this case. Warning was provided and it would have been very easy for the player to get back into the game.

The one area I would argue here is when the player was banned, they should have been protected in game and not left to be #SD#. Again I do not know all of the specifics other than I was the one who #SD# Gen lee (not knowing they had been banned, I only saw them offline at StarDock).

Lets take a min to remember that children can play this game. Sire Lancelot (player from years ago) started playing when he was 12 years old. We should think about things like that before posting to the public. Just imagine a 12 year old boy playing TW and his mother walking in on that graphic on fed com. Player lost to the community. Over the years we have lost enough players due to excessive smack talk, threats, badgering, and just plain cruelty. Smack talk is a slight part of the game but we need to remember to be respectful. I Blasted Farley a couple of times, he forced me to CBY in a game today, but tonight we will be chatting it up on ICQ because we have a mutual respect for each other.

Enough of the rant. it happen, it's over, move on. Lets be adults (assuming we are all adults here) , shake hands and move on to helping to grow our community.

1. BS. Re-read the rule. I did not use "offensive language regarding religion", i.e. insulting someone's religion. If you are saying something I said might offend someone who IS religious, not their religion specifically, well that would result in the ban of virtually every player of this game. That is not a legitimate argument.

2. I was not actually warned at all about what you supposedly banned me for. You told me not to name ships something offensive, and I did not do that after you told me not to. You told me not to post offensive images to fedcom and I did not do that after you told me not to. It's really hard to not get banned for violating rules that are not published when you randomly create rules on the fly.

3. If I do owe anyone an apology, it's my team, for my inability to determine in advance what might result in you banning someone outside of the published rules. I don't see how I owe you any apology at all. You weren't playing the game.

you should NOT need a rule to tell you not to display that sort of thing in a game. From the description of the picture, it was disgusting and offensive. You were wrong and you know it. Arguing that you were not wrong or that the sysop was wrong just makes it worse, and makes you look worse. No game, sport or public forum would allow that. Grow up.

This was the primary reason I refused to apologize and allow the farce to continue. By the way, for those who are not aware, very early on in the game I bought an IDC (best ship in that game) and named it something that might perhaps be mildly offensive to an overly sensitive person. We are talking about the name of a ship here. I was told by this sysop that unless I renamed the ship in 10 minutes, he would delete the ship from the game. The ship in question had 200k figs on it (virtually all we had at the time), was very expensive early in the game, and was located in our base, far from stardock, while I was a red player. I managed to borrow a ship and get it there to rename it inside his deadline, but that could also have gotten me killed. And he apparently was willing to delete a maxed out expensive ship on the first day of the tournament, effectively putting us at a massive disadvantage, because he didn't like what I named it.

That, to me, is utterly unacceptable behavior for the sysop of a tournament.

I have engaged in plenty of smack talk in this game with people who are now my friends and who I play with regularly. I also had vicious arguments with at least one player who later became a regular teammate in the game. Because I respected them. Same thing.

The incident in question that got me banned stemmed from smack talk that was started by another player on fedcom, a player I used to corp with all the time and who I still respect and regularly joke around with. I wasn't angry, the other player wasn't angry, nobody really cared. As a joke, I drew the image with planets at dock and said "hey I left you something at dock". I then went away for a few hours, came back and was banned. I was, frankly, shocked that any sysop would do such a thing in a tournament. If he had an issue with it, he could have simply reached out to me and I would not have done it again, just as had happened with the ship names and fedcom stuff.

I had no intention of violating the rules, and at the end of the day, I didn't. This was an arbitrary and capricious decision by an overzealous sysop.

Agreed. I am not the one who posted a "poll" intended to inflame passions about what happened. I was ready to let it go. I am simply responding to being attacked in public.

To be honest, I never even looked at the location of your ship. I knew that a CHILD like you was incapable of apologizing.

There will always be some players who push the boundaries and test the patience of the sysop. If you want to feel the same frustration, please post your own rules on your server Shadow, and you'll find out soon enough. Rules are meant to be broke, right?

We're all adults, nothing anyone can say or do in a game will offend me. Most of the time it's Flying Aces with their Fed Com ansi, I have Fed com off most of the time, so I miss most of it. I applaud Micro for trying to raise the standards of his server. We're not children and shouldn't behave as such.

#1 The rules were posted, playing the game was agreeing to play by the rules.
#2 You were given a warning, you knew he was serious when you had to tow the loaded IDC to SD as a red just to change the ship name. So you know he was enforcing his rules.
#3 If you enjoy playing on his server, be an adult and apologize.

If you don't like the rules or the settings, don't play on that server. It's really just that simple.

Oh please, one of your blues could have taken it to SD and changed the name; other than that you could have dropped the fighters into the sector; other than that it is my understanding that the majority of time you were just sitting at SD as a red taunting other players in your IDC, and doing surrounds as if you could not get rid of your turns fast enough.

Other than that you did not post just one image over comms, you posted more than one--and additionally were rather volatile towards others on comms who were merely trying to converse; other than that you were in-fact forewarned, including by your teammates to knock it off, but apparently just DO NOT CARE.

Lord... Why is this still being re hashed. The tourney is over with. Each person has their own point of view and there is validity in either statement. It's rather nonsense that there are all these rules now. fracking liberals.

You all act as if saying an off word on Fed com or having a ship with a curse word on it is the worst thing that could happen. Oh me oh my. Some of you malign others so terribly on fed that it shows your true nature.

I can't feel sorry for any of you. You know what this game is about so live with it. Get over yourself.

I really don't think liberalism has any bearing on the current discussion; liberalism (not to be confused with classical liberalism or libertarianism) is a political ideology that seeks to capitalize on the (faulty) notion of using the government as an instrument of force to compel a vastly diverse populace into perpetual agreement of the progressive status quo or otherwise risk civil and/or criminal consequences and public ridicule, scorn and contempt.

The instant issue is a matter of respecting the (reasonable) demands of the host and of playing at a higher ethical standard (at least) during an official tournament.

The corp in question is one that refers this as being a "big boys game" and yet several of its numbers act like anything but--you all know who you are.
