Buy Outs
Toying with the idea of outlawing ship and planet buyouts in the unregulated/truce games on my V2 server(ice9). They are already outlawed in the builders and and regulated games. Thoughts Comments.....

Re: Buy Outs
IMO... Buyouts are a limitation of the database design and were was never intended to be a game tactic... I think of it as a form of intentional bug use.

Not that it really makes sense to apply any of this to the real world, but... why would there not be a limit to the number of ships that exist or could be created by a factory in a given time period? Logic would dictate such a thing exists, and that it is possible to exhaust that limit. Every tactic that might appear unseemly is not necessarily "bug use". I agree that planet buyouts are less likely to be realistic, however buyouts of supplies such as torps would be possible in a realistic scenario. IMHO, this "bug" should be fixed whenever the design flaws that allow players to easily shift from blue to red are fixed. It also should not be possible to bypass a waiting attacker through timing games right at extern. That could be viewed as a bug, too.

Re: Buy Outs
It is not a bug, but it is a design flaw that allows one team or player to make the game unplayable for everyone else. It is not limited by the number of ships that could be bought in a specific time frame. There are x ships, and when they are bought, they are gone. This would be more like if there was only one car lot on the whole planet, and it only had had 400 cars. So Bill Gates bought all 400 cars, and now no one can drive to work. There will never be any more cars unless Bill crashes one of them, so everyone moves to the country, grows there own food, and forms small communities. Hey, maybe this isn't such a bad idea after all. Yeah, there isn't much sense comparing TW to the real world. If there were a limited number of new ships, with new ships delivered on a regular schedule, that would make real world sense. Scouts would be cheap and abundant. Imperial Starships would take forever. Can you imagine being on a waiting list for your ISS? It would also be cool if there was a used ship yard where you could buy old clunkers real cheap, but then you would need mechanics to fix them

Re: Buy Outs
Yeah, I guess my only other general feedback would be that SK deserves a lot of credit for the way he set things up - having builder games, regulated games and "anything goes" games on the same server, with different rules, is pretty much unique to his server. I personally like the setup a lot, and would like to see it remain the same. Once you start imposing rules on "anything goes" games, it's no longer anything goes, and that is a slippery slope that's hard to control.
So my vote is to keep it the way it is -- let those who want a milder style play one of the other categories of games, and let the consenting adults do reckless and stupid things and suffer the consequences.

Wish I could take credit for the idea, The old ice9 had a similar format. I just built on it. As far as the argument goes its an old one. Micro is right in that it is a flaw in design that limits that amount ships/planets in the database. Shadow is right in saying if you going to have a "anything goes" game then there should no limits. I started this poll to see where everyones mindset was on this issue. tho only a few people voted it seams pretty split and as I said Micro and Shadow did a good job arguing both sides of the issue. if the vote had got hard one way or the other i might have changed my mind. So Ive decided to keep it the way it is at least for now. For two reasons. 1 It really doesn't come up that often. and 2, there are other games on the server people can play in that have the rule in place. sk

This was my third rule, until you forced me to add a rule above it. I fought the rule for a long time, until players were locking down all my games with it.
