I love scripting myself, and I think scripting is actually the reason TW has survived; it's one of the few competitive online games that is scriptable in any way. In most games, any kind of automation is considered cheating. It's the allure to programmers that keep the helpers updated, and the helpers keep interest in the game alive. WOW has a very powerful scripting language, and 3rd party plug-ins that can do a wide variety of things to help you play the game.

Yeah, and I've written some addons for WoW. But they don't automate anything; they only present data and user interface components. You can't move your character or take any actions that affect other players.

Script writing is a great way to get your feet wet. (And this is why I shun TWX scripting... I feel like learning that language would rot people's brains worse than BASIC.) Think of TWX as a domain-specific language. No one argues that domain-specific languages are bad. TWX is simple, with about 20 frequently used commands, and another 50 or so less frequently used. But I completely understand the appeal to write your own helper.

I don't agree with either of you, which probably means that you are both right. I started out with FORTRAN, which was the basis for BASIC. On punch cards, no less. Took 3 days to run a program - one day to cut and send the cards 3 miles to the machine, a day to feed the m/c, a day to get back the printout. Then the cursed syntax errors and repeat. Laff.

 Re: SWATH scripts since 2003
I am actually playing World of Warcraft right now. I have been catching up on the forums while I travel around. Writing my own TWX scripts had me interested in writing WoW add-ons, but the only thing that I ever wanted turned out to be illegal, while I am always thinking of things that I want to do in Tradewars, not that I want them enough to work on them very often. I do like graphics...

 Re: SWATH scripts since 2003
This has got to be the OLDEST/LONGEST running thread on the planet.
Just a quick update, my thoughts haven't changed about scripting but my server sure has. Now hosted on a Windows 2008 Server connected via a 100 Mbit connect, I think it will be hard to beat. Pings are running in the single digits with 10ms being the worst I've seen yet.
twarbase.com, plug it in on port 23 and come help me build some games....
PS Mr Warcraft because you like the graphics. The graphics I make in my mind while playing TW will ALWAYS be better than anything your rock em sock em game can create.

Master Blaster wrote: AND THIS IS THE VERY REASON I LEFT THE LAST TIME!
I got a great idea! Lets make a script that can build, kill, colonize and protect all while I'm in the damned bathtub! All I gotta do is make sure the 'puter has power and it's turned on... WAIT! I bet I can install a solar panel so I can let the thing run connected via a Microsoft/Hughes satellite while I'm running naked around in the freakin desert! I guess this thread was active while I was running around in the wrong freaking desert--in uniform, in combat armor, in an armored fuel truck. I was playing some game and started having difficulty with another player, presumably in the same country as the server, let alone using a satellite with a two-second delay. Things escalated and my scripts became more complicated, although I am sure they were still novice compared to some that you guys write. I left TradeWars running one day when I went on a mission and when I returned my script had podded my rival. Boy was he upset about it! He ranted and raved about how I was a coward for relying on a script. If I hadn't he would have taken everything. No regrets!
