| Post subject: | Extern Bug - Citadel De-Leveled |
I think I have found a bug while running the buy shields script in mombot at extern. My level five planet made it to the class zero port, extern took place -- next thing i know the planet was no longer level 5 but level 2. I'm thinking the planet must have hit the class 0 sector while the corp figs in that sector were being removed by extern. Anyone ever experience a bug like this. It was not fun stripping the planet that was now stuck at the class zero. I had never seen a planet in tradewars loose levels before this event. The only other bug I've seen in Tradewars was long ago when you could duplicate ships, cash, figs with a type of corp transfer server timeout... I'm not a scripter or programmer but I do tend to find some strange things out about tradewars on occasion -- this issue almost seems similar to the above one and lends me to believe it has something to do with how the code handles data when something unexpected happens as your timed out from game server or in some other way lose your connection to a particular game. Any Ideas, Is A Planet losing levels normal? |

if the planet was in an MSL during extern that would explain why the citadel was demoted. The class 0 sectors are considered part of the MSLs i believe. |

Archy is correct, any planets at Class 0's or in a MSL at extern are reverted to Level 2. This is by design. |

Thanks Guys, I had never seen a planet demoted before so I apologize for crying bug but I couldn't think of a better way to describe the event. Nice to know at any rate. I don't mind the punishment, luckily on that server I have about 60 decked out planets. |

Yeah, extern is one of those ugly parts of TW where the transition to full interaction was incomplete. You can play through extern these days, but I can't begin to guess all of the potential issues that might come from it. What you experienced is pretty harsh. If extern was designed to work while someone was online, it would probably give you a warning and a chance to leave before having your planet level dropped like that. Now that TW has an option to close the game for a period of time, I'd like to see more people closing the game around extern, just to keep things clean. But overall, I haven't had a lot of reports of issues with players playing through extern. Really, what I'd most like to do is replace a lot of extern with realtime processing, so maybe you'd be allowed to enter the MSLs for a limited period of time, but not allowed to remain there. That would work so much better than just penalizing players at midnight. It's too easy to move out and back in around extern, and then someone who isn't "breaking the rule" like you ends up getting smacked. |

I had a thought. Of course that's what happened. You should have received a message from the feds saying they destroyed your quasar cannon, and not to put them in the MSL's. A possibly less harsh punishment in this instance may be as follows. If the offending planet is L4 or above and has enough fuel to support it, the feds activate the transwarp by remote control (they built that feature into the transwarp drives for just this purpose) and move it to some random sector just like being towed out of fedspace. Inconvenient to say the least, but at least days of work aren't undone in less than a second unless, of course, an enemy finds it before you can move it again. If the planet has no transwarp or doesn't have enough fuel, either destroy the cannon as currently happens, or maybe give a warning for the first offense to give people a chance. |

I was glad that this feature was released before my Tournament started, as I wanted to give it a try on the Tournament game. The main complaint I have received is that some players re-login scripts might fail to re-login, but I figure it is the players responsability to test that script and fix it if necessary. |

I agree. Adapt or die ;) That's what they keep telling the non-scripters. |

A login script would be a good first script for someone to modify since it is simple, and they already have one if running TWX to work with. If it crashes, they don't die. |

The Feds could show up after a couple minutes and launch your planet into some random distant sector... using your ore, of course. |

Yes and no Prom .. it may be a simple script but with all the variations to a game it is my most edited script. What I mean by that .. is each time I edit a script I increment its version number .. and that one script has gotten more increments then any other. |
