I'm still unclear about this setting. Can somone explain?

In the classic game the setting is N/A. Default is 1440 min.

It is expressed in minutes.

When you lock onto a fig, and that fig is taken out, you
get a decay message. You can hold that decay'd fig
for the duration specified by this setting. A setting of
N/A or 0 means you immediately lose the lock, so you
can't pdrop on it. Anything else means you can plock,
hold the lock, then drop later. 1440 is 1 day.

Fighter Lock Decay - the time it takes to loose the lock on fighters in a sector.
eg. in citadel you type P (sector number) and enter .... someone comes along and takes out those fighters ... then the timer begins.
When the time runs out , you no longer have a lock.
Otherwise withing that time you can still jump planet , in this example.

Be it know also that if inactive sub prompts were off , when you make that lock
you also don't get any fighter hits.

I believe in the old days you did.
This is why I think the Sub prompts should default to On.
But that is another story.

OK, so in order to hold the lock, interactive sub-prompts must be on so the player can chat, bot etc. while holding the fig lock?

1440 min = 24 hours = 1 day or is that only until extern? does extern break the lock?

I believe its a timer .. and midnight would be 12 am , extern can be any other time.
But for the most part , most SysOps set it to midnight as well.
So I would have to guess that its a timer and midnight and extern should not effect it.

I have not held a lock any longer then a few minutes after it was hit , so I have not tested it to the extent.

Yes that is right about the interactive sub-prompts.

ISPs can be off, but you can't chat via SS or see other
fig hits without it. That's not a substantial problem for
bots, however, as it's trivial to add a time-out value.

Extern does not break the lock, it's the time from when
the fig is taken out that matters.
