Re: High Scores Update
Trust me, Thrawn, I don't want to cause you any unnecessary work. You're a great advocate for and supporter of the game, as well as an innovator. I want to enhance the experience for you and others like you, not make it more of a grind. Whenever I make a change, if it creates a problem for you, point it out to me before you go to a lot of trouble rewriting your scripts. There are some changes that I won't back down from, but in other cases, I may just not be aware of the effect it might have. Like when I changed "Trade Wars" to "TradeWars" in some places. That's a branding consideration, because "Trade Wars" is far less unique in search engines, but it never occurred to me that I can't modify something like that without creating work for players and gameops. In-game text, sure, but a startup screen title that has nothing to do with game flow? In general I don't like that scripts tend to make the game more rigid and discourage evolution, but I am also sympathetic to people like you, as well as helper authors, who shouldn't be forced to do extra work based on my whims. If I cause you extra work, it will be for something I feel strongly about, and I'll gladly explain my position to you.

Re: High Scores Update
@BigD, maybe it would only be relevant to time-limit games, but I've learned not to assume anything. The fact is, it can be used for time-limit games, and anyone who doesn't want to use it doesn't have to use it, and anyone who has their own unique way to run the game is free to experiment.
The point was made about defaults. I would default to the current state. So H updates in realtime, CLV in realtime, # on TWGS shows everything, # in games is enabled, and V updates every hour.
Oh, I just remembered, I'd want to support 15 minute increments up to the first hour for the reports. I'd work that out so it's a clean and easy-to-use setting with a lot of flexibility.

Re: High Scores Update
While you're at it, why not have a game open/close time? So that games can be open only between, say, 12pm and 1am every day?

Re: High Scores Update
I haven't had a request for that before. Is that something you feel would appeal to your players? How would it enhance the game? Just by allowing players to be competitive with a much smaller time commitment?

When we discussed this it was more on the assumption of using server side scripts or just opening/closing the server by script to accomplish it. At that time you weren't working on the beta tho.

Right, it allows people with a job to go to work w/o worrying that their base will be blown to bits while they're out.

Re: High Scores Update
This last request , I thought was for games to be set (tourney mode) to open " date/time" and the closed "date/time"
Not to be used to prevent normal game play till your at keys. Because not everyone is on YOUR scheduled times to play.
The tourney mode is the open & closed issue , lets talk about it in that context please.

Right, no, what we talked about last year was a script that would bring the entire TWGS up and down at a set time. But that's not without its own problems. It's not the tourney mode issue, that's something completely different. Yes, not everyone has the same schedule. But thats why it'd be optional. If a sysop wants to create a game for east coast and mid-western time zone players, why not? It would be nice to have that option.

If anything make the H highscore optional for those who think it will benifit thier games not haveing highscore. No need to change the update times for any of the score settings (if it aint broke, don't try fixing it). Who's online should remain enabled at all times, nobody likes to play totally in the dark. If the "timed game" doesnt work right maybe it would be easier to remove that. Isn't turns/unlimited turns sufficient? even in tournement play.

Re: High Scores Update
I have to go with Sing on this one. I've noticed that the majority of the players from all parts of the world are mostly at the keys between 7pm and 7am EST, and on most servers extern runs during those hours. Deactivating the game for a specific amount of time in the day allows the players to work, sleep, eat, and maybe even have a sex life. (IF she's not still mad from the last game you spent 3 weeks in.) lol

That is sort of one sided statement. Time limit games are a part of Tradewars, and can prove to be very beneficial in tournament games. Just because you don't play time limit games doesn't mean they won't be used. That would be like me saying I never play unlimited turn games so JP should just do away with them.

Currently I am scripting it to open and close (not allowing new players) during night time hours since I had a player decide to bring in 6 dupes. Rarely is this needed during day time hours so I don't concern myself with that. Plus opening a game when I can't be home but has already been announced it helpful, currently this is being scripted as well. I thought there was also going to be a way to remove a ban on a IP without having to take down the server? Did this get left behind or just overlooked? The above mentioned methods in your previous post look good to me

I do have a suggestion that may make all people happy. Just add it in as an option that is only available if there is a time limit set.
That's a great idea! Good thinking Big D!

Very nice! That would help quite a bit. I'm getting too old to play against West-Coasties
