New Survey
JP has requested more specific information about what version you recall first playing. Please take a moment to complete this very short survey, thank you! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CV9899N

Re: New Survey
i started on a local bbs doors version, on an atari 800xl. it sucked because the atari screen was 40 characters across, and the ibms were 80- the line carryover was a bitc#. wouldnt play like that now tho, i dont miss dial up and one hour time limits at all.

Re: New Survey
I can't recall the 1st version I played. The 1st one I can remember was V2B3 I think. That's when I bought my TW2002 and Gold codes. I still have the letter I got my codes with somewhere. Yes, it was a real paper letter. laff I should scan it and post it here. lol

Re: New Survey
First version I played was the MBBS, on a BBS called iDIRECT via Telix. As an aside. I wonder if a 'minor' twgs upgrade adressing notable bugs/issues would be more welcome before a 'major' twgs upgrade is released for Beta testing? N.B. Option 2, in the survey has duplicate choices... I wonder which is more correct? Never mind that the question itself is a tad superfluous, Cruncher makeup that survey?

Re: New Survey
I would fill out the 3 question survey but since it is not inclusive I can't even answer #1 question. http://wiki.classictw.com/index.php/Inside_TradeWars_-_History_-_TimelineSnippet From WebSite: 1984 : TradeWars, the original multiplayer space trader, is released by Chris Sherrick. Though many believe he was influenced by DECWAR or MegaWars, Sherrick has said that he was not familiar with either game at the time. Instead, the game is conceived as a cross between Star Trader, the board game Risk, and Hunt the Wumpus. It is written in BASIC, first for the TRS-80 Model 2 (unknown BBS), and then later ported to the PC to run under the Nochange BBS system. This initial TW version has 60 sectors. With the ability to attack other players, it is among the first multiplayer BBS doors. That is the first version I played (1984). We used to go to Radio Shack and wait inline to take turns. Each person was allowed up 10 minutes unless you found someone then you were allowed an extra 5 minutes.

Re: New Survey
First TW I played was the Pascal version. We then went with the regged version from Castle Ravenloft BBS for our WWIV system - "thinking" in 1989/90.

I debated about adding all the other variations of the time and I was looking at the Museum timeline when I made that survey about 1:30 AM my time. That's why I added the second question about how you connected and if it was single or multi player. That's what JP really wants to know. In my first survey, I didn't take into account the timeline close enough and only broke it down to 1/2 decade chunks.

Re: New Survey
I started on telnet to local single node BBS called Marianas BBS and one other (can't remember name tho) sometime in 88'ish ... But my real telnet experience was on Frogland and Gumby.com back in 89 on multi node BBS systems where I met Ran Al Thor and The Guardean who taught me to play the game.
P.S. Thank you guys , I've been playing ever since .. and started hosting around 1991 - 1992 , I'm probably one of the longest running servers still left up as well one of the few longtime players still playing without a break from this game.
I do miss my old team members : Robber Baron , Swamp Rat and Woodnymph and a shout out to them too!

In my first survey, I didn't take into account the timeline close enough and only broke it down to 1/2 decade chunks. Yea not nit picking just I could not answer either since I actually played before BBS so no telnet or dialup, and prior to the versions listed. I am probably the odd one that has seen the first versions and still comes back to play. I would like to say I played regularly over the years but I took a break here and there and then started playing when I was in the military again on a local BBS ran by a Master Sgt in the 964th AWACS AMU. I purchased my copy in 1994/95 when we would deploy to Saudi and Turkey we would play local sure helped pass the time. I have been playing again since 2006 or 07 I forget now but I do enjoy the challenges that the game provides and I have watched change over the years. I wish I had been playing in the early 2000's as that seems to have been the busiest time for TW's.

Re: New Survey
Yeah, I started around '94 World Groups HVS MBBS version 2.01p. Dunno why I remember that. I still have my letter snail mailed to me from Martech Software, Inc. dated Feb. 19, 1996. That's when I bought the codes for the DOS Multi-player that Gary had out. This also included the codes for the single line bbs 1.00 to 1.03. I played from the day I started daily for 6 years straight, rarely ever taking a day off. The first 2 years 100% local bbs 100% manually! I thought anyone use a helper was cheating. LOL Then our local bbs joined the telent network and lo and behold, more TW games all over the place! PacRim was one, Another in New Jersey where I met my first telnet nemisis Someguy. I spent some time in a bbs in Texax and finally called Fament home for my most competitive years. That's where I ran into some scarey dood called himself Space Ghost. Then spent the last couple of years beta testing TWGS before I quit in 2002. Now I know why I played daily.. darned port roll-over bug never got fixed in HVS. If you don't trade your maxed ports on schedule they roll to 0% and you have to wait for them to regen again! I truly do appreciate the turn bank now too! So, I've been multi-player the whole time.
