Ferrengi Behavior
Hello. I used to play TW2002 quite a lot, and I just installed TWGS and am messing around in the default game locally. One thing I didn't expect is that, from my first encounter with them, the Ferrengi are attacking me. They aren't pulling me over and demanding my stuff; they just attack. This isn't how I remember it working. Is there a setting in the default game that makes them behave this way, rather than just robbing me like they did in the old days?

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
Check out the alien editor. There are settings there for you to control the behavior of these little critters.
You can make them passive or aggressive, hunt in groups or not. Lots of fun trying different things out with them.

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
I don't recall, but this behaviour might have changed with gold aliens. You can still run classic aliens and see if they behave as you remember.
Don't forget that they do hold grudges if you attack them first.

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
I think that may have been the case. It's also possible this was because the "default" game that is loaded when you first install the server is several years old. My current game is recently banged, so I'll see how Ferrengi behave when I first encounter them. I may have to rebang it with classic Ferrengi and see what they do, as well.
If it is a Gold behavior change, is there some reason their robbery behavior was changed for Gold? Is there some advantage to running Gold Ferrengi instead of Classic Ferrengi? Are there any problems associated with running Classic Ferrengi alongside Gold Alien Traders?

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
Yes, running both will cause a lot of problems. Gold aliens are designed to do more stuff that an actual player might do, and there is a lot of flexibility in how you can configure them.

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
I do not know what problems may arise from running gold and classical Ferrengi, although each has its own homeworld.

"What we've got here is... failure to communicate." :p What I'm aiming it is Ferengi that, rather than just attacking everybody on sight, do the thing where they go "HOOMAN! PREPARE FOR BOARDING!" and take your stuff if you let them, then leave you alone for a while. Is this possible with Gold Ferengi, or do only Classic Ferengi do this? (I have no intention of running both at the same time.) At the same time, I really want to run Gold Alien Traders, since I want to make some radical changes to their ship lists... and you can't do this with Classic Alien Traders, if I understand correctly. So, Gold Features enabled, Classic Ferengi enabled, Classic Alien Traders disabled, Gold Ferengi disabled, Gold Alien Traders enabled. Does this create any problems or jarring inconsistencies?

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
I think Classic Ferrengi and Gold Alien Traders would get along okay. There may be a setting on the Alien Traders that prevents them from being aggressive toward other races' homeworlds. When both types of Ferrengi are enabled, one of them (the Gold ones, I think, but I'm not sure) will sometimes lose ships to the opposite Ferrengal's quasar cannon.

Yeah, it's funny to watch Ferrengi mothing Ferrengi. LOL

Re: Ferrengi Behavior
People ask for my advise very infrequently, but I do not let that stop me! So, if I captured both Ferrengals and put them in the same dead-end, away from my stuff, would they focus on each other and leave me alone? That sounds like wishful thinking, but still!

Somehow, I think their grudge would still be against you As much as we would like to believe these little AI running around in our games are truly AI, with some observation you'll see they usually travel a pattern between home world and zero ports, never straying too far from the beaten path unless you anger them. Knowing this, it's pretty easy to stay out of their way.

Knowing this, it's pretty easy to stay out of their way. I used to play a game called Ascendancy that was crippled by atrocious AI. So, if I put their homeworlds adjacent to zero ports they will stay there? What if I put them in trade lanes?

You can do all sorts of things with them, make them docile, or make them very aggressive and hunt in packs. I have an edit it did a couple of years back with 4 races. I didn't move their planets, but if you're playing solo, it makes you feel like you do have company in the universe. Some more aggressive than others, sort of like how real people play. Play around with them, let us know what you find out when you put the planets next to one another. It's fun.

Since I claimed their planets, I was thinking of using P-warp, but I have not been able to connect to that server for a few weeks. I can just bang a game, though. How many aliens are there?

Hey Jev, I hope that everything is going well for you. You seemed to liven things up around here for a bit and I enjoyed that.
Good luck.
