Ok, I seem to be doing something wrong. I have read that the bust rate is 1/50 for stealing from ports. Which seems to be a very fluid number for me. Some days it is 1/50 but then the very next day it runs about 1/25. But what has gotten me more perplexed is the robbing of ports. I was at 16k exp and every time I rob at the 6*exp I get caught. So I lowered it to 2*exp which appeared to work for the first 15 or so times. But now im getting busted about every 8 to 10 times I rob. If I raise that rate any even to 3*exp im getting busted every other time. So basically what am I doing wrong? or is it the settings set by sysop? Do i need to use different ships? the one, three of them have well over 1k ports each and one is pushing 10k.

That's a question that's taunted TW players forever! There's a total randomness to busting that no one can control, but you can increase your odds of success.

The information you need is located at the main game menu, type * to see the rob/steal settings of the game. You'll need to know if the game is in MBBS mode or classic.

If both rob and steal are set to 100%:
Classic door: rob=3%exp, steal=exp/30

If the settings are 50% rob, 70% steal:
MBBS mode: rob=6%exp, steal=exp/21

If MBBS Mode with Mega Rob bug enabled - you don't need experience, but you do need to max and buydown a port leaving 3.3 - 6.6M on the port then rob it all back at once with an additional 11%. So 3.3 + .11 = 3.7M rob all at once.

The only other thing necessary to rob and steal is an alignment of -100 or better.

If you're only mega robbing, your experience will keep increasing. If you are stealing your experience will stay around 8K - 16k. The higher your experience the greater your odds of busting.

If you find yourself slipping below max hold levels of experience, reserve some cash for planet busting.

Ok i went to the settings and the rob and steal rate is set at 120%. So can I get a explination of how that impacts what i'm trying to accomplish.

Yeah, if they are messing with the default settings, then you need to get more creative.

"Anything else then you will need to apply this formula:
Rob: 3/(%set)= (x)% exp to rob
Steal: 30*(%set)=exp/(x) to steal
Replace the (%set) with what the game settings are, (x) is the product."

There's some misinformation in this quote, as follows:

1) A megarob yields high EXP gains (and losses), yet it's subject to the same 1:50 bust odds, so strictly megarobbing should net large EXP gains.

2) Higher EXP does not increase the bust rate or odds, which that 2nd statement implies. If you're within the parameters spelled out by Traitor, the odds of busting are a random 1:50 chance - unaffected by high EXP.

That's probably correct, but it sure seems like you bust more if your EXP is too high. I also wonder if certain Days have higher bust rates, 'cause I was busting 1:5 one day and it was back to normal the next day.

I've heard other people speculate about certain days of the week being worse, but I'm pretty sure that's just a statistical effect.

If you flip a coin five times on a Monday, and it comes up heads every time, that doesn't mean the odds of flipping a head are higher than 1/2 on Mondays.

Of course, I don't have the source code so I can't say with certainty that you're wrong...

I'll clarify - higher exp. increases bust rates when you are SST/SDT'ing. High exp. does not effect megarob busts.

I don't get it either. As far as I know, bust rate is 1 in 50, as long as you have the cutoff experience (or greater) for the number of holds you are stealing.
