Hi!

In the very late 90s up until her death in 2002, my mom was a very active member of the Trade Wars community here. Her name was Lisa Wilson-Cutler and she used the monikers Kitty Moon and Rave at various times. My father was also a Trade Wars player who went by Ic3hawk and Rant, though according to him he wasn't as obsessive about the game as mom was.

In preparation for an upcoming move I was going through the boxes upon boxes of legal pads that she filled with with her unique 4 pt block print. Seriously folks, she'd write three lines worth of print inside a single college-rule notebook line, sometimes four. Magnifying glass level small print, here! A couple of the notepads I happened to pull out and go through were related to Trade Wars. I've chatted with Mr. Pritchett a couple times over the years when I was pursuing foolish dreams of becoming closer to my mom by trying a game she loved to play, but it wasn't until a few days ago reading through her old notepads that passing along a message here seemed like a good idea.

This isn't like some message that she left behind to be passed on. But it is from my mom in every way possible. It's taken from the notes she wrote for herself, the random thoughts she jotted down on paper.

She loved you guys. She loved the game, she loved the people that played the game, she loved the people that bought and ran the games, and she loved the community that existed around the game. She thought the world of each and every one of you, even the people that she argued with.

My mom did a lot of cool stuff in her life. I won't list it all because it would take forever, but being a part of this community... I have no doubt it was one of the most satisfying things for her.

I don't know how many people are still around that would know of my mom. I switch computer games every three months at least and don't often look back. But even if you didn't know her, I'm pretty sure she thinks the world of you for playing the game that she loved so much.

Game on?

Destiny Cutler

Hi there.

I didn’t know Kitty Moon, sorry for your loss. iirc, I started around the late 90’s, myself. It’s never to late to join a game somewhere, even as a casual player. The commmnity has shrunk considerably, but I think of it as a downward trend, with the possibility of an uptick. Lol.

Tradewars is not just a game, it’s an Advertisment free game!

Hi Destiny,

I do recall your mum, we were never corp mates or particularly close. However I do remember talking to her on twgs.org forums and also getting some advice on starting some websites. If I recall right she was a very successful website entrepreneur and was also very open about offering advice to others.

I also do recall her being a bit obsessed about the game much like myself. I left the game for some time not long after myself. However I continue to return as after playing other games myself, usually ones involving expensive graphics cards!

I also remember her passing and oddly whenever we loose another tradewars player I often reflected on it. Mainly because she was one of the first people I know who died. One day she was communicating on the forums, offering advice to people she'd never met, then suddenly there was a message about her passing.

Most players have moved on but she was definitely known and I'm sure remembered by others also.

Hi Destiny,

I think I knew your Mom as Rave. So few of us female TWarriors, we tend to notice one another. She was a very dedicated player, always testing and teaching.

She touched JP especially, he took her passing hard. Your mom is immortalized in the game as what we call a Fed. One of only 3 special AI characters in the game. I think she's called "Commander Wilson" and it's her duty to clear the major space lanes each extern.

The next time I "see" her in the game, I'll try to get a screen cap. Know that she was loved very much by this community as well.

Thanks so much for popping in and helping us to remember her.

Hugs,
Cruncher

I remember her. She was a very interesting person. She worked with me some in the game towards the end of her life. Its not easy becoming a legend but she did. Thanks for stopping by the forum.

I'm sure she'd be thrilled people still play the game even if a lot of people have left it.

One commonality between people that knew my mum is that they almost universally say they remember how much she liked to help other people with issues and problems. (And her insane energy!) But yeah, she always made time to help others, and had a pretty big impact on people she knew.

Hi Cruncher!

Some years back I was going through a phase where I thought I could get closer to my mum by experiencing some of the things that she loved to spend her time on. I think I was in my last year of Junior High or maybe my first year of High School at the time. I'd gone through some of her stuff during one of our moves and discovered this game called Trade Wars 2002. Well, discovered stuff about it at least. There was no actual game to go along with it. Asked my dad about it and one thing led to another and I reached out to Mr. Pritchett to get a copy of the game, which he graciously provided. We talked via email for quite a while, but I remember he was very busy with what he was working on at the time and I always felt a bit bad about picking his brain about mum, so I think I finally decided I should let him be.

Dad and I played for a bit. I remember how excited I was to play at first, but after a while it kind of lost its appeal, though I think it was because I was basically playing all by myself. That's really not a lot of fun after a while. I remember I tried playing on someone else's server once and I was dead within just a couple minutes.

The most interesting discovery for me to come out of this time is that I owe my life to the game. As crazy as it sounds I never bothered asking my dad how he and mom met, but it came up when I first asked my dad about this game called Trade Wars. They met playing the game. So no game, no Destiny Cutler. That was kind of a "wow" moment for me at that point in my life. Even today, it's a bit weird to think about.

Thanks for saying hi!

Destiny

Wow! Now this is the third couple I know of that TW brought together. How sweet!

Just let me know if you'd like to give it a try again. My server has settings that help new and returning players have a chance to enjoy the game. Maybe you can nudge your Dad back in too. :)

I might do that, just to see what its like playing with other people. I'll have to relearn everything I figured out about the game but since I didn't know that much it shouldn't be too tough.

Kav sighted Captain Wilson, here's the screen cap:

Captain Wilson warps into the sector.

Command [TL=05:54:12]:[1] (?=Help)? : 600
<Move>
Warping to Sector 600

That Warp Lane is not adjacent.
Do you want to engage the TransWarp drive? No

Computed.

The shortest path (11 hops, 44 turns) from sector 1 to sector 600 is:
1 > 2 > 9 > 174 > 2301 > 2511 > 3759 > 832 > 3304 > 4086 > 3107 > 600

Engage the Autopilot? (Y/N/Single step/Express) [Y] N

Command [TL=05:53:47]:[1] (?=Help)? : 500
<Move>
Warping to Sector 500

That Warp Lane is not adjacent.
Do you want to engage the TransWarp drive? Yes
Sector 500 is 10 hops away from here.
Locating beam pinpointed, TransWarp Locked.
All Systems Ready, shall we engage?

Captain Wilson warps out of the sector.
