 RP has been Photon'd
Sorry to say, RP's TWGS was Photon'd this week. It appears that possibly a brownout torched it. One minute it was running fine, then suddenly it vaporized online.
I tried the escape pod, no go, I think the MB is history. I can't complain, that machine has been flawless since it was put online in '05 and has run almost 24/7 since.
So now I'm hashing over if it's worth rebuilding.
It appears there are (in my mind) almost to many servers our there for the player base. If I build it, will they come? Let me know here if you're looking for another playing field, and what edits you would like to play. If I get a responce here, I'll build it back. If there's no interest in playing I'll let it die.
For the record: RP's TWGS offered not only game play, but Teamspeak communications as well as website/forums.
Also if anybody has any parts they'd be interested in donating to rebuild a machine, get in contact with me here via PM but I don't want to accept anything unless I'm going to rebuild.

What kind of mobo and parts do you have? Post your specs, someone might be able to match them. This is reason #435 why you need not just a surge suppressor, but a full UPS.

You know, I have a UPS on the other side of the office running my other computers, and network stuff, but couldn't run that computer on the UPS the way things were layed out. I might have to get another for that side if I put up another computer. I'll have to see if I can find the dell specs on that computer and post them. Good idea, thanks.

Nod. UPSes have a wattage limit, too much stuff on one and it'll make it useless.
I've got 2 here. My main system and monitors are on one. The router, the modem and the server are on the other. Was definitely worth the investment.

I can tell you it's a Pentium 4 2.26GHz processor with 512MB Ram running XP Pro SP3 on it. I found a sticker on the MB that may/may not be a dell part number that reads DSN CN-04T274-69861-28F-2991 C/O CN I also just remembered that I have an identical computer that my wife uses once in a while. Think she'll mind if I turn hers into my TWGS server? I DID say it was a backup computer when I bought it (as she rolled her eyes)

They do work pretty well in that role. I can get the mobo info, but IIRC it's a special form factor mobo. That's the thin flat model, right? Not the full tower? It's a socket 478, that I know. I don't have an extra one of those, sadly. Not sure if you have any budget for a fix, but there's some really cheap 478 mobos on ebay. I found this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-F19R0703-Socket ... 0608594259That comes with a processor and ram. Good incase something else is fried. There's also several full optiplex systems there too. That's where I got mine. When you turn it on, do the fans spin? Does it beep @ post, or...?

 Re: RP has been Photon'd
Well, I confirmed it's not the drive. I stuck it in my wifes (identical) computer, and it booted up just like it was my TWGS server. (wonder if I should just leave it in there) When I try to turn it on, I get absolutly nothing, no graphics, no BIOS prompt, it just sits there and consumes energy with no return. I tried pulling each memory chip out one to a time to test them, same result. Unless it's the CPU itself it's down to the MB. This isn't the thin (like 4-5 inch) model, but has the full chassis with the clamshel style case. The drives and CD sit horizontal in the case.
Thanks Sing,.. I'll look at those EBay listings you linked.

If no fans, prolly power supply. If fans do come on, motherboard, CPU, ram or vid card. Bad vid card usually POSTs, but if it's totally fried it could be interrupting that. So any micro atx socket 478 mobo should work. If you can't find one on ebay, here's a new one sold thru amazon by dealstop: http://www.amazon.com/Intel-D850MDL-Soc ... B00006BBSJThat's more expensive, but... seller of last resort and all. There's several on ebay, like these: http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-Optiplex-GX260 ... 0518268948http://cgi.ebay.com/ASUS-P4SD-Socket-47 ... 0638688935

 Re: RP has been Photon'd
Fans spin up when I turn it on, so you can say the power supply works, but perhaps not all the voltages are there. I think I have a power supply checker The graphics I can swap out and check, but I get no BIOS even when I power up, so I'm leaning strong towards MB. I've had several Dell MB failures but not this model. Thanks to Sing I've located the exact same MB for $40 so I'll prolly rebuild this machine. Thanks for all your input.

 Re: RP has been Photon'd
The 4T274 part number in your list is the MB. I found several via Google, ranging from $40-$80, so not bad as far a repairs go. I haven't played at your site, but I join up if you repair.
