I must have lost power some time last night. I could not get the server to boot up, so I took it to my son who has the "magic" touch.

It's up and running again, and while we had it on the bench replaced the battery too, so it should keep better time for the games now.

The battery has nothing to do with a server keeping time, at least not while it has power. By default Microsoft configured the time service to sync with the PDC. Since you only have one server it is the PDC, and configured to sync with itself. It has to be reconfigured to sync with an external time source. Normally firewalls aren't configured to block outbound traffic, but UDP port 123 outbound (NTP/SNTP) must also be open.

Thank you! That was easy! The battery was low, so we replaced it just cuz there was a spare with juice available.

I also learned something new from my son today. We thought the power supply was the problem, but it tested fine. When a computer shuts down suddenly and won't reboot, unplug the power cord, turn off the power switch (if there is one) and hold down the start button. This purges the system of any energy, then plug it back in, turn the power switch on and start it up. That's how easy it was to get this machine running again.

That also works on dell desktops... I personally have never had to do it to a server though... Did you know that a USB device, like a printer, can keep a desktop from powering on under certain circumstances?

I did not know that. I don't have any printers plugged into desktops. Here at home I have an old laser, wired plugged into router so it can be shared.

It's not good for the computer to just turn off like that. You should invest $50 and get a cheap UPS.
