Did a TRACERT on UTW for fun and found my 'route' passes through a very interesting IP Address: 7.2.168.1

According to 'whois' this IP belongs to the DoD, or Department of Defence. This intersting IP appears in every route I attempt to Trace --even www.canada.gc.ca.

Now I know an organization as large and important as the DoD would know how to hide itself if it needed too. But the really interesting thing is that they've inserted themselves between me and my ISP.

Anyone else feel Big Brother looking over their shoulder?

It's more likely a bad route than anything suspicious. Neither the DoD
nor law enforcement needs to route your traffic thru their router to see
what you're doing. All ISPs in the US have invisible wiretap provisions
built into their routers, and the major backbones all duplicate their
traffic for analysis and storage.

More information...

http://www.wired.com/science/discoverie ... 6/04/70619

http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/03/hacker ... cisco.html

And there's even an RFC:
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc3924.html

Cisco, one of the largest router makers, has a method that allows
the administrator to route any traffic to any law enforcement org
upon request. It's completely invisible unless you happen to work
there, in which case you'd be compelled to keep silent.

This isn't paranoia, it's the 21st century.

I called the DoD Info Centre.. to see what's up (chris, if you're reading this, thanks again for your time ;) , they refered me to us-cert.gov. They think someone maybe spoofing me or my network/isp. I guess the DoD doesn't mind this activity as much as US-CERT. I'd have thought that the DoD would bounce all over this Spoofing of their IP Numbers.. heh... Oh well. I'm a civilian, what else can I expect but 'the run aronud.'

Seems the novel 1984, should have been titled: 2011 8)

LOL. You can't spoof a routing point. A spoofed IP cannot
receive IP traffic, because it's lying about its IP address.

Your problem is that your ISP's routing table is fubar for
one reason or another. If I had to guess, I'd say they are
probably routing some traffic to an analyzer, and they
messed up their routing table (probably added the analyzer
IP to the routing table, instead of via the LEO backdoor
or trunk port).

This stuff happens occasionally when you get a new tech
working on technology that's past their training. Just call
your ISP, get to their level 2 people, and tell them of the
problem. Have them send a level 3 guy out and look at
the problem. Send them a tracert to prove the point.

If they want to pay me a ton of money, I'll fly out and fix it
for them. *snicker*

I imagine that the problem will 'magically' fix itself shortly. I mean, how often do they get a phone call from an average-joe inquiring about their activities: "Hey! Why are you spying on me?" ... heh.

As an aside.. I wonder if there are any TWGS' in OHIO... seems my ping there ROCKS! 8)
