Pretty simple, would you play on a server that would not allow scripts or helpers? |

Its funny if you asked me that 3-4 years ago when I first came back to the game after a 15+ year break, I would prob. have said sure. but now after getting my feet wet again and learning all these scripts and how to use them and even taking a crack at writing my own, I would say no. But I think thats part of the problem. for Returning players its kinda like getting thrown to the wolfs unless some one really steps up and takes them under thier wing they are kinda screwed. We need to figure out a way to bridge that gap better IMO(which is hardly expert) sk |

I don't think I could play without an auto haggler |

"IF" I did play 100% manually it would have to be a very low turn game. I'm talking 750 at most. |

The only way I would play without scripts is if it were against people I know IRL. And as Cruncher said, a very low turn game. Except I'm thinking more like 250. |

I would not play. That said, it is impossible to detect offline helper use, and scripts can be altered to make many of them undetectable and their use unprovable. |

I can see where the impulse to outlaw scripts/helpers is inspired: A player from the past BBS days wants to try to recapture the fun of those days. Problem is that those days are gone. The novelty of chatting online with another human in realtime has been cheapened by the latest IM or chat bot, skpe or whatever. Hard to recapture that rush of contacting another human across the world. There are enough servers out there that everyone should be free to make their own niche in the world. Even if it alienates most current players, a non-helper server could be an answer to some old timer's prayer. Live and let live. |

Shoot. If you really want to keep 'helpers' out of a game, there are plenty of TWGS settings that would help make this happen; not the least of which: would be to Turn on *all* Delays; High Steal Factor, Planets that hold miniscule amounts of product/fighters; minimal production; Low Max-cmds; etc. etc. This wont guarantee manual game play, but it would even the playing field. |

Now that most everyone else has commented I'll voice my opinion. I don't have a problem with players that would rather play by hand or play without agressive scripts. What I have a problem with is those players and sysops trying to force thier game style on me and the game I've known for the last 10 or 15 years. This is just two different styles of play and to each his own style. What peaves me is when someone says I don't know how to play the game because I use scripts to play it for me. I have news for those people. I started playing by hand because that's all there was when I started playing Tradewars. I know the game pretty much inside out, most of the formulas, and I can play almost any aspect of the game very well. I just prefer to play the game the way it has evolved over the years and not go back in time to 1990. Choose the game or server that is right for you. |

Unfortunately they also make it awkward/uncomfortable to play by hand as well. A sysop shouldn't have to use these settings. I think that is really the point we should discuss. If a sysop makes a rule for his server, can't we just agree to abide by that rule? Of course you can make a script that simulates a human hunting and pecking. Of course you can set up a series of responses to a human on Fedcomm, but should you? Quote: I just prefer to play the game the way it has evolved over the years and not go back in time to 1990. Choose the game or server that is right for you. Vote with your feet if you don't like server rules, but let's try to play within the bounds of the sysop's wishes. Edit: PS I do think the sysop has a responsibility to his/her players to make sure the rules are clear and outlined in the game bang announcement. |
