First off, I don't want to spark any kind of ver 1 or ver 2 war here, I am just trying to get a feel for which version to script & practice in, if I decide to come back. I used to play years ago, taught myself to be a decent TWX Proxy scripter and learned enough about the game so that I could hold my own against the average opponent fairly well. For the past couple of years I have been thinking about coming back, I have been playing around with scripting a bit, and re-familiarizing myself with the game so to speak. Not nearly back to old levels, I would probably say right now a good player would put me in the 'baby seal' class Anyway, I have a local server I have been using for scripting and brushing up, and I have run both versions. I like some of the game-op capabilities of Ver 2, and I like the bigger universe, but other than that I haven't seen too much of a difference. But, I haven't been doing any combat type stuff, just running 2 characters local for script testing mainly. And they have all been mostly builder scripts, I started out a builder, and I kind of naturally gravitated toward that. Never played Red much, but I did become fairly good at holding my own out in the Universe and holding onto what was mine against a corp of more experienced and more knowledgeable (in the beginning) players. It started out a kind of 'unofficial' truce builder type game, but heated up after a while, luckily I had found out about the old EIS forum and already knew about the TWX Proxy forum, so I was able to learn quite a bit before it was time to drop the smack down. Or was it getting smacked down? So I've been using Ver 2.20b for my local game, script testing and all that. But I cut my teeth on Ver 1.xx and learned my scripting and playing there, combat, etc. And I have been searching for information on various things I need to brush up on, and in the process I came across some older posts from a couple of years ago that have me wondering now. There was talk about bugs in Ver 2 that can effect game play, as well as deliberate changes in server timing and processing of commands, things like that. In one of the posts I read that you won't even notice the difference in Ver 2 until your first time up against someone. Then you will see that combat goes a lot differently than it did in Ver 1, and that some of the bugs were supposed to drop you to the login screen in the middle of a melee. Not a good thing in my mind. I know Ver 1 had a few bugs in it but I was always told they weren't serious and wouldn't effect game play much. From what I read in those posts I stumbled across, supposedly I would know it right away if it came down to a knock-down drag-out with someone in a Ver 2 game. So, coming from a Ver 1 background and having been out of the game for probably close to if not maybe even over 10 years, and having read those posts, I'm wondering if the bugs in Ver 2 that were spoke of have been sort of 'ironed out' and I won't notice much difference, or if I would soon be ready to move back to Ver 1. Sorry about the long post, but I had a few different concerns that are kind of related, and since they kind of all tie in together I decided to just get them all in one post. Thanks for any insight anyone might be able to provide. I'll ask the more script-related question in that forum. |

I'm not a script writer, but I know from working with them that there are subtle differences between v1 and v2 to consider. I don't know the details, honestly. I would suggest that you look at Micro's web site and see where most of the players are playing today. V2 does as you know have sysop conf that v1 does not. Get familiar with these and know that when a game has delay settings that are slow, they are discouraging aggressive script play. Examine the edits, play what looks interesting to you, and good luck! Maybe I'll see you in a game sometime. |

Hey Cruncher, thanks for the reply, appreciate it. If I ever get the time, if Real Life gets a little less hectic and I get feeling a bit better, maybe we will see each other in a game. If I ever manage to play again, I would be in the beginner games though, I would need some serious training wheels the way my game would be at this point. And you are correct, I do know a bit about the settings available to a game-op in tEdit since I bought a license for local script testing. My knowledge is nothing like the game-ops who are out there doing a great job keeping games going for us players though. I did learn a trick or 2 so ya, I might be able to put up a game and make it hard on certain types of game play even in Version 1. Just probably wouldn't get a lot of hardcore players there though. Thanks for the referral to Micro's website, I've been there a few times looking for games. It's a great resource for that, and I think Micro is doing a great service to the game community keeping that site up. Thanks Micro. |
