I beleive it was Mary Ann who created the port names, and a fine job she did.

Then I remember Gary put one in for JP, I've seen that a few times. JP put one in for Eleq I beleive.

This is a fun way to honor those who've contributed to this game.

Today I ran accross a port name I've never seen before. Does anyone know who this belongs to?

Ports : CSM-101, Class 2 (BSB)

I believe that's the model number of the original terminator:
Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 or CSM-101

Err - never mind Crosby already answered. Guess I should read the full posting before answering...

Unread post Re: The naming of ports
I've enjoyed trying to figure out where some of the port names came from myself. I considered putting an area in the museum where the ports are all listed and people can post their thoughts on where the names come from.

I was thinking about putting a few of my favorites in here to see who can figure them out, but with google and wikipedia, that's too easy. So let's turn this around... I'll give a description and let's see who can provide the port names.

1) Three port names taken from Star Wars
2) Three port names taken from Star Trek
3) Three port names taken from Tolkien's works (not the author's name)
4) Three port names taken from Dune planets
5) Three US presidents
6) Three scientists
7) A port named for a classical piece by Strauss used in an early sci-fi film.
8) Two ports named for a well-known Japanese film director (one first name, one last name).
9) Any reference to the Doctor Who series
10) Any dinosaur

To make it interesting, the first person to complete this quest will have either their game name or real name added to the port list (whichever I feel is most appropriate). Good luck!

Holy crap :)

I'm sure you have a list of port names to work from, but I still expected it to take awhile before someone got all these. Nice work!

What's cool is there's so much variety in the port names that most of your answers weren't the ports I had in mind. But they're correct nonetheless.

Well, I think Oso is a great port name. If you'd like your last name instead, let me know. I'll be posting a new update in a day or two as a quick bug-fix build, so I'll get it in with that release.

Thank you!

I found Akira, Ent and Istar in a game I was in. Others I had seen previously. I did check the list I had before submitting it though. The hardest for me was the Star Trek names. Never could be quite sure on some of them. Oso would be a better port name than my surname, I can guarantee you that!

I'm even more impressed by your knowledge of the trivial and inane if you figured these out from memory :)

Oso it is.

Ok, it's in.

For bonus points, unscramble this port name:

noltpigosh

I don't think anybody will get this one :) Even with the aid of a computer...

I usually do well in Trivial Pursuit. Just think of the song "White and Nerdy" and that is me.

phlogiston is the answer for the bonus round.

I'm a big fan of Star Wars, I am a Tolkien nerd (except for all the languages- that is why I have google), and I Doctor Who is my favorite TV show of all time.
Star Trek is good, but I never got into it. There are a lot of ports out there whose names I've come across in the almost 20 years I've played different versions of this game, and they have been pretty unique. I am surprised you didn't have a deity category, so I could have mentioned Molock and Elohim.
;)
