what kind of CN settings do you use?
I usually turn 7 of Yes, and I turn color and animation off, set CN9 to Space (just started doing that recently) used to run "any key" but that day I was running "space" for cn9

cn9 silences the messages? Then why in the world would someone (I won't say who) suggest I set to cn9 space????
hmmm
So I don't actually have to hit the space bar to cancel a message? I thought that's what setting to "space" did. keep in mind I was hitting no keys during this exchange, especially not space bar.

CN7 silences all messages
CN9 sets what you want to use to abort displays
i do not think hitting space even CAN abort a message.
Command [TL=00:00:00]:[7106] (?=Help)? : C
<Computer>
<Computer activated>
Computer command [TL=00:00:00]:[7106] (?=Help)? N
<Set ANSI and misc settings>
(1) ANSI graphics - On
(2) Animation display - Off
(3) Page on messages - Off
(4) Sub-space radio channel - 0
(5) Federation comm-link - On
(6) Receive private hails - Yes
(7) Silence ALL messages - No
(8) Change Password
(9) Abort display on keys - SPACE
(A) Message Display Mode - Compact
(B) Screen Pauses - No
(C) Online Auto Flee - Off
Settings command (?=Help) [Q]
notice #7 hehe, if that is set to YES, then u get no messages.

Actually, it was pointed out in a different thread that I was in error on the message thing for cn7. If cn7 was set to yes, you wouldn't see the powering up message. However, if cn6 were set to No, you'd experience what happened to you, the powering up but no damage reported.

Personally, I play with cn9 set to all keys. That setting will abort basically everything but major prompts when you press any other key. If you have it set to space, you have to use a space to abort those prompts, meaning you need to pad your macros/scripts with spaces. Personally, I think that's just a pain. There are very few scripts that need all that crap that gets aborted if you write them right, even though there are some scripters out there who want to force you to use cn9 space anyway.

is there a more-than-insignificant difference in speed between cn9 allkeys mac/script and a 'padded' cn9 space mac/script?
i imagine on a server with a low max commands/cycle cn9 space macs could suffer, but anything beyond that?

for macro's i pad with spaces and use cn9 space. never have a problem with speed. personally i like to know what i am aborting (with macros) i havent tested wether space counts as a command, but i will go out on a limb and say 100% NO, it doesn't count as a command.

I abhor cn9 = all keys because there are too many situations in which I really want to see my displays without having to go toggle cn9. For example, lift from planet, holo scan, land. If I just send a macro "QQSHL99*C" with cn9 = All Keys, it sure will be fast, but I won't see anything on the holo scan either. It's just a personal preference, but with CN9 = Space, I never have to toggle CN9 for the rest of the game, and I have complete control over what gets aborted and what doesnt.

Kemper, I'm a bit suprised that you prefer CN9 All Keys when your outspoken that gridding "blind" is an act of desperation rather then hunting. I agree with CK on this one, leaving it set on space gives you far more control over what you see and don't see. Besides you never have to second guess yourself on what you left it toggled to when building your macro's.

There are cases where cn9space is prefered. In those cases, I toggle it. In general though, I don't want to have to worry about that display, slows me down too much on dialup.

Actually, I've never used cn9 space, I always use all keys, and I never have trouble seeing a holo scan! really!
Oh wait, you guys are using those funky alternate macro programs that use key strokes OTHER THAN ^M for the return key!
That could be the difference.
