 The Swamp BBS has unearthed....
This is probably the very last version of HVS MBBS TW there is, with a build date 6 months after HVS closed. Trade Wars 2002 by High Velocity Software Build date: January 15 1998 Build info for: Major BBS/ Wordlgroup NT 3.xx Version #: V2.03aWhy is this important? This version may have never before have been played on a public server. This will be run as game L and will be resetting in a few days. The Swamp BBS runs all versions of Trade Wars from the early door games to the very latest Beta release. Yes, this site is an approved Beta Test server. I’m gameop on TWGS game C, and I’ll also reset this game tonight. This is a World Groups BBS front-end and you must create your account first. You cannot telnet directly to the games. For those of us who became addicted to this game during the 90’s, this set-up brings back a lot of fond memories. http://theswampbbs.net/http://theswampbbs.net/twmain.htmhttp://theswampbbs.net/news.htmtheswampbbs.net:23

Re: The Swamp BBS has unearthed....
Just to let you all know the game is now online and available for play version 2.03a for Worldgroup 3.xx NT. Also Gary Martin had High Velocity Software (Jeff Moriarty) develop the multi-player version for Major BBS software (known as the mbbs version) it runs only in DOS. They also developed the later version for Worldgroup BBS software which is the 2nd encarnation of Major BBS and runs in windows NT or Dos depending on which flavour you wanted.

If that is the case then I will have to check it out. It has been so long. Vulcan

Actually I kinda miss that sound. Hehe... Swath Does work in this version, TWX move scripts work but none of the others that I can tell yet. Mombot DOES NOT work! Kav has a DOS emulator and he’s using Telix and his own scripts. I have a few macros I've written in REXX for Zoc, Kav also writes a few scripts for Zoc. But yeah, like the 90’s only much faster. The last game we played was HVS 2.03beta and it had the port roll-over bug which drove me crazy! The ports seem to behaving properly, but we’ve just reset last week, Tuesday midnight EST so we’re just now starting to have some maxed ports. But this is truly the final version released for HVS dated Jan. ’98. We don’t know if this version was ever played publically before this. Stoneslinger posted screen caps of tedit options, very, very simplified options compared to what we have today with TWGS. One of the first things you’ll notice is this universe has a TON of one-ways! Configuring that was not an option then, and it was aged 100 days before it opened so the Ferrengi are plentiful and the Dreadnaughts are out. There’s still plenty of room in this 5k sector universe for more players!

Re: The Swamp BBS has unearthed....
I may head back over there and register, do they actually call for the phone verification, or is that just a leftover from the dial up days?

Cruncher when it comes to the HVS games please refrain from comenting on what settings thier are unless you are 100% postive. 1 way and 2 way warps set by the sysop previous to big bang. The "screen cap" is of tedit General options(beta 6) not the universe creation menu. Ansi menu's are in the tw menu with the option settings for HVS TW. To answer the voice validation, yes it does happen but I have started a new job recently on nightshift and finding time to validate users when they will be awake has been a challenge. You can enjoy the game in "demo" user class, your just limited to few hours per connect.

Re: The Swamp BBS has unearthed....
Thanks Stoneslinger,
I have a question though on the demo account, does the demo status affect the the cim mode and not let you use the command string to start doing a ztm, cause I am having issues there. can't seem to get a ztm started, Kavanagh was trying to help me there but for some reason it just wouldn't work, we tried it with the swath terminal, and with the windows telnet terminal seperately, I don't know if it makes a difference but I am usint Windows7 Ultimate 64 bit, I just had to ask, just to make sure. And thanks for the old HVS game, now I have to figure out how to play in it all over again, lmao.
Thanks for making something to be truely like old school again.

Being in "demo" user class will make no differance on game play, only the time per call/day allowed. I think you need to manually enter the ship computer (C), then run ztm. I have to do this in swath to get ztm or updates on sectors and ports. As for voice validations I do do them but have started a job on nightshift and its makeing it very hard to validate on a regular basis, let alone get some decent sleep.

Re: The Swamp BBS has unearthed....
Props on putting the HVS version online. I've wondered about the HVS version for a while, and I'm looking forward to playing with it when I have some time.
Thanks for the hard work, and the willingness to do something different.
Regards, +EP+

Re: The Swamp BBS has unearthed....
I'm very pleased with this version so far. The port roll-over bug is fixed and capping rogue ships at SD does not crash the server. Swath works in this version TWX and Mombot does not. So it's a simpler style of TW no plock, pdrop, no bots or gridwars. I'm sure if someone wanted to rewrite TWX scripts they would work. I re-wrote a couple of my Zoc macros, and Kav has been writing Zoc scripts that work. We're writing trading scripts, not attack scripts. But there are certain elements that TWX and Mombot rely upon that were not available in this early version. TWX "move" does work, and you'd be amazed at how fast this moves! Did have Swath crash a couple of times using a t-pad colo quick macro. I think this is just too fast for Swath to process. No pacing, ship or turn delays here. When JP gets back to work on the MBBS mode, having this live version of HVS MBBS to draw from will really come in handy. We never did finish putting the polishing touches on that MBBS mode. There are still some subtle but fundamental differences that would be fun to include in the TWGS MBBS mode.
