I was in an unlimited turns game about 3 days ahead of anybody else getting a real start, and all of a sudden Friday night 6 new players show up. I gave many of them fighters and a little start-up cash to encourage them to stay, and one of them asked for a truce until next Wednesday. Thinking this might balance things a little (I had literally 99% of player-controlled assets and ALL the colonists), I offered the truce to each new player, who negotiated various time frames.
One player, in particular, wanted his truce until 12 noon Saturday (today) and talked a lot of smack about how he was going to make a million fighters "in several hours" and own the game anyway (not exactly his exact words, but that was the gist.)
Well, there was an alien planet in the game, and this smack-talking evil found it and went to invade, but his invasion failed because he ran out of fighters. After about 15 minutes of no activity in the logs, I loaded up my IC's and headed on over to finish the job. =) Well, this player strenuously objected, claiming that he was protected by the truce because he "controlled the sector." I have asked many people this past week and a half since I've been playing this game, "What is covered in a truce?"
In another game, I didn't invade Ferrengal because of a server-wide, sysop-mandated truce, and lost out when another player did, claiming alien and ferrengi and any other non-player-created stuff was exempt from truces. Now the player in my game tonight, whose invasion failed, claims that I can't take the planet because he controls the sector with a few defensive fighters.
I understand that if his invasion SUCCEEDED, that's probably protected, at best a very gray area, but a NPC planet that did not get taken should be fair game to anyone, right? Or am I wrong? If I'm wrong, I'll give him the planet and eat the losses as a learning experience, but from what everyone is telling me, I'm in the right.
As a side note, he threatened to kill me if I "interfered" with his (at the time non-existant) invasion, so I didn't feel TOO bad when I was sitting in the citadel, saw him invade, claim, and start scripting down ore, that I slipped out of the citadel, claimed the planet, and turned the cannon on. =) His script caused his pod to continue down into the atmosphere cannon after his ship was blown up.
I *know* this guy's gonna be back to try to avenge himself, but if I am in the wrong, I'll just give him the planet.
I would like the opinions of some of the people here.
Thank for listening and opining,
galaxi

Truces that i have ever been apart of these things are alowed....
1)attacking defensive or toll figs that are part of someone elses grid.
2)Invading ferringal and alien planets
I do not see the problem with you attacking his defensive figs because if he had real control over the sector then he would have the alien planet also....There fore he did not have complete controll over the sector.....I would let the sysop make the final dedcision but in the meantime tell him to suck it up...

Looks like you gave him the planet. I take it that the planets and players are truce material, not a few fighters, but he should have left it alone once it was yours, if you claimed it. However, you gave it to him when he invaded.

Thank you for your responses, Strider and Fido, but I do want to clarify for Fido that I *did* claim the planet upon invading. I was sitting in the citadel, trying to get control of my shaking hands, lol (my first real invasion) when I saw the messages that the cannon was hitting, he landed and destroyed the few ftrs I had put down, and claimed the planet back to himself. That's when I removed the 387 mil from the citadel (before he got to it) and sat in there trying to think, what to do. It occurred to me that I could probably just claim it back, which I did, which made it hostile to him (which I was hoping it would.) Then I turned on the cannon.
I would like to hear more opinions about this from others, please. I want to KNOW that I was in the right (or be told otherwise.)
Thank you again. =)

Once you clame a planet it's yours so if anything he broke the truce. Atleast that is how I see it.

I agree. He broke truce and took your pl,anet. 2nd a few defensive figs in a sector does not mean it is your planet, so you can take the planet. You did what any other player would have done. If you are going to invade an alien planet you better make sure you have the resources. Now if he had dumped planets of his in there then it could be considered his base. Which might have been a truce breakage. For a final answer I would contact the sysop.

Dumping your planets in there is like a dog taking a piss in someone else's yard, the dog doesn't automatically own the yard all of a sudden. Anyone can take aliens planets during a truce while they are still owned by the aliens.
If I begin a game with 4 alien races, find all the alien planets right away and dump planets and figs in there and claim those are all my bases just so I can have more time to build up enough cash to actually take the planets isn't gonna fly with anyone else in the game.

Your ok on this one, truces generally only apply to attacking another player directly in an attempt to pod or kill them. Attacking their deployed fighters or attacking aliens and their planets do not violate truces. The only exception is if a sysop decides to make that part of a truce. You arranged the truce between you and the other player so unless you or he specified fighters or alien planets your ok. Personally if he was going to make a big deal of it I would have photoned in under his fighters and taken the planet without killing his fighters at all, then tell him to go pound sand. Then I would have made it my mission to kill him every chance I got for the rest of the game just to drive the point home.

I think that the other guy was totally in the wrong. You kicked his Butt out of the sector for breaking truce, as you were already in the planet he was taking. The guy deserves to be wiped out for this treachery, IMO.

I'd say you did pretty good, galaxi. If this other player invaded the planet AFTER you'd claimed it then got himself toasted by the cannon due to his not checking to see if anyone was in the cit, then that's his lookout. If you're really worried about it and the planet is a lev 4, then simply move the planet.

He never claimed the planet since his invasion failed. Just putting some sector figs in doesn't mean squat. It was yours to take. Next time maybe he will plan his invasion better ( being that he 'owns' the game lol )
And truces generally refer to the Traders themselves and their sectors with claimed planets.

You know, Overkill, it's from people like you that I learn the most in games like this. =) If your opinion substantially differs from others', I honestly would like to hear it. That's why I posted in the forum to begin with. But if you really do agree with me (and your message wasn't sarcastic) well, then wooohoooo! I finally did something that <<<OVERKILL>>> approved of! =)
