Micro,
I'm still not clear on the "why". You mention the "No Dupes" rule and there the why is clear. But if I find a base why can't I let everyone know? Certainly if I wanted to invade it myself I would keep it secret so I could reap the benefits but if I don't have the resources to invade, it seems like publicizing it might be a good strategy in certain situations. Get your 2 enemies fighting and worn down and then I can slay them both.
I also got slapped for letting people know a players location. I scanned and saw pwnie sitting in a sector right outside FedSpace so I announced this on the Fed channel. Again, I'm looking for the "why". Having 2 enemy teams fighting each other and consuming resources sounds like a good idea to me. Why must I keep his location secret?
I'm still guessing there isn't a real definable "why" to the information publicizing rules.
It may be clear "Why" there is a "No Dupes" rule, but the rule is ambiguous and unenforceable, because there is no definitive way to positively identify a player when the only thing we know about them is their IP address. That is of coarse a completely different and very old discussion.
What you did was equivalent to a player at a chess tournament giving advice to another player during a game. It doesn't really matter if he was suggesting a move, giving him some other form of advice, or pointing out that one of his pieces was in danger; It would not be tolerated. If I was the tournament host, I would want to disqualify both parties from the tournament.
The bottom line is that the information you were providing could have potentially given other players an unfair tactical advantage.
