(Most) humans sleep from time to time. A game without time limits on playing time, is a script kiddie game, similar in kind to an unlimited turn game. It devolves into CPU/Script versus CPU/Script.

If you're referring to a keepalive, sure. If you're referring to running a torper afk... my macro will beat your script. A TL game doesn't give you any more sleep... if a person is going to grid on you, they're going to grid on you... regardless of whenever it is. All a TL game does is give you an excuse not to care.

And it's still quite trivial to monitor game activity while not in the game. How? First start with the # screen, then go in and compare to the high scores on a regular basis. There's no time penality for hitting "H" from the menu. If alignment or experience are changing... they're doing something. That however requires a script to do, which is only going to happen in a TL game. Irony of irony, eh?

The Irony that you refer to was debated to death 6 or 7 years ago. There are ways around it.

kav - i see where you are coming from - BUT

a) scripts are used whether there is a time limit or not
b) all of us are script kiddies
c) script authors have a distinct advantage in TL games because there is a distinct shortage on scripts designed for TL games. therefore a team with a good script author will have access to the kinds of scripts that monitor the game from the menu and log in when it looks like something significant is happening.
d) from my experience in the last TL game, time limits do not afford one more sleep. instead what happens is that you must find a rotation where you keep one player online around the clock and when you are sleeping is when the youngsters with all the time on their hands are working you over. this is no different than non-TL games except that now, only one of your players is online instead of all of you. if all of you were online, then your opponents might use a little more caution working you over (they don't know for sure that you're sleeping). but if its just one of you online at night it becomes quickly clear that he/she poses no threat, then they work you over with reckless abandon.

the solution you want is not a time-limit game, but a play-limit game e.g. where you can only play between noon and midnight - or name your hours.

Rev,

The debate about this has been going on and off for almost as long as I can remember. There are ways around it. If one ignores (for now) menu squatting, a simple way to prevent corp 24/7 ingame presence is divide 24 by max per corp and set TL lower.

for corps of relatively decent size, i.e. 4 or more, that leaves time limits under 6 hours. i would probably not play that game.

maybe its just me, but i hate getting invaded offline. it feels too much like old bbs tradewars that was pretty much single player. you work so hard running your turns (telix with no scripts) and then you log in the next day and its all wiped out. at least without time limits, if i get invaded offline, i can blame myself for not being there. when the time limit kills me, i just want to smash something.

its not like we have to agree on this. you want to sleep at night. i want scripts to defend my crap while i sleep at night. sounds like almost the same thing to me. i wonder which is more manly? with time limits, you get to invade people when they are offline (girly). with time limits you can blame things out of your control for losing (girly). without time limits, you can get your beauty sleep knowing that your enemies will die at your gate or your planets will run away when they find you (girly). without time limits, you have to invade other people while they are online or actively guarded by scripts (MANLY).

I'll bite, grin.

Telix for Windows (TFW), which I use, is virtually identical to the original Telix (for DOS) in terms of scripting capability and language. Nice "bells and whistles" added, you can make windows type mouse clickable stuff etc.. thats about the only difference apart from DDE.

As to Manly v Girly, I must be Girly, but never knew it before. Manly men let afk scripts take care of them?

And since then people have found ways to get around those ways. =)

I always preferred Telemate over telix. See, I even capitalized it.

Real men don't need much sleep. I'm like a sleep camel, I can store it and then live of my reserves for a month.

Telix has 2 languages, SALT and SIMPLE. Both are acronyms. SALT is more or less C++. SIMPLE is very similar to Telemate, and English. As is ZOC to REXX/Deutsch.

LOL REXX is an IBM invention - it is basically the batch-file language for OS/2 - it has nothing to do with germans.

Here are the votes as they tally AT THE MOMENT. I will make up a list of people who have submitted their votes later, my printout cut out people's names and the pages got outta order.

1)   Sectors:
     A) 5k      (5)
     B) 7.5k (1)
     C) 8k
     D) 10k (6)

2)   Turns
     A) 600
     B) 750 (2)
     C) 1000 (6)
     D) 1200 (4)

3) Corp   Size
     A) 3 (2)
     B) 4 (5)
     C) 5 (5)
     D) No Preference (1)

4) Planets Per Sector:
    A) 3 (5)
    B) 4 (2)
    C) 5 (3)
    D) No Preference (1)

5) Turn Bank:
     A) 2 days (8.)
     B) 3 Days
     C) 4 Days
     D) None (4)

6) MBBS (10) Non-MBBS   No Preference (1)

7) Photons:
     A) 1 second (2)
     B) 2 seconds (9)
     C) 3 seconds
     D) No Photons, they scare me. (1)

8.) Death Limit
     A) Yes (5)   How Many: 5, 5, 4, 5, 4-8, 10
     B) No (4)
     C) No Preference (1)

9) Suggested Edits or Edit-Type Preference:
Alienbase: Call to Battle
Desert Sands
Asteroid FTW
KI
Moo
Ck-Edits: Killer Instict or epoch
Pirates
Random Suggestions: Good Red ships, Fast Cit Times, Invisible “online” list,

10) Corporation Affiliation: There are 3 people with no corp affiliations who have voted. There are 4 people that say they are BYOC. One problem: When I asked for affiliation, I meant what CORP are you with and whether or not you’re going to bring other people. In which case, those other people need to also come to EIS and vote and also indicate what corp they are from so that I can start making lists of people who are IN corps, what corps they are in, and who is on what time, and also make a list of people who need to be randomly assigned a corp.

Also, not everyone indicated whether or not they were a solo player or a corp player. That is very important to know because if you don’t indicate that you’re not on a corp, I will assume that you ARE on one and you won’t get on the list for people who need to be corped up.

Other Suggestions, Comments, or Requests:

Time Limit – 1 votes
No time limit – 3 votes

The People who have voted so far are:

Killian
the reverend
Cernnunos
Kane
Bait
Space Gost
Singularity
MisBehavin
Parrothead
KewlBreeze
Father Cajone
Kavanaugh

Thats 12, few of which have indicated which corp they are in or if they are a Solo player in need of a Corp.

Please speak up about what corp you are in (or if you are not in one) and what members will be joining you and gett them in on the voting process. Remember we will need a list of names of people who are for sure playing before this game starts, there is no just showing up at bang with your peeps.

As for the general discussions that seem to be going on around the voting, even though this thread is made specifically FOR voting:

Time limits suck / don't suck: Beating a dead horse
Scripts suck / don't suck: Beating a dead horse

Voting on this game is in the present topic. We had ALL of these conversations about time limits/scripts the last game sign-up and I personally am tired of skimming past all the crap to find game information. If you want to debate scripts/time limits YET AGAIN, make a new topic called "Beating a Dead Horse: Time Limits and Script Discussion" and KEEP IT THERE!

Like it or not, this game is going to be highly competetive like last time with SDs and Photons being handed out on the regular. If last game is any indication of what is yet to come, you will probably die quickly if you don't have a script playing in this game, and that should be the end of the discussion as far as this topic is concerned.

We are not Voting for BYOC or Not BYOC, this is a mixed game where some people will BYOC and some will sign up solo, and we will make some corps at random of the solo players. I am one of those solo players myself.

People who are BYOCing need to provide the name of their Corp, a list of corp members who are participating, and have corp members fill out a “ballot”.

If we can’t determine who is solo and who is BYOCing, we will not be able to form the corps that we need as stated before, this game is going to be a mix of both.

Killian - solo
the reverend
Cernnunos - solo
Kane
Bait
Space Gost - solo
Singularity
MisBehavin
Parrothead
KewlBreeze
Father Cajone
Kavanaugh - solo
Slim Shady
Fork

If you are wrongly listed as a solo, please alert me and tell me the name of the corp you belong to. If there isn’t a “solo” or the name of your BYOC corp next to your name in this list, you haven’t told me what corp you belong to. Please do so in order that we can tell who is going on what team.
