Unread post Need help enableing telnet in Vista 64 Bit
Any of you computer geniuses know how to enable telnet in the 64 bit version of Vista?
I’ve googled and followed the directions I find there, but when I try to telnet to a TW site I get nothing.
I tried to back up my OS to XP but can’t find the proper drivers for the computer.
Any help or links will be appreciated.

By default telnet is off...

http://www.arsgeek.com/2007/03/20/enable-telnet-in-windows-vista/
or

Or you can just use a 3rd party ie Kevterm.

I had the same issue at first. This should get it working.

Yeah, same instructions I've seen all over, however when I click on my telnet link in my sig I get a can't connect error, but on any xp machine it opens a window to my games.
I'll have to look at Kevterm, never thought about third party apps.

You using IE or FF.... IE has a protected mode it uses by default. Firefox opens it just fine. I tried IE and it gave me the protected message, well hope that helps.

Vista x64 Where is Telnet?

I noticed that with my default Vista x64 install, the telnet application was missing. Turns out this is an optional feature that you can turn on by doing the following:

- Control Panel

- Programs

- Turn Windows Features on or off (under Programs and Features)

- Telnet Client (in the dialog box)

Yeah, this is the same directions that you can find by google that don't seem to work on IE. BUt as was stated above, maybe it's IE killing it.

Frim what I read, I gather you are attempting to use telnet via the browser

Have you tried using the built in telnet client (the one you activated in the programs and features)

on your keyboard, press both your windows key (orb if vista) and r

and type in telnet twgs.address.com:port#

press enter

Hope this helps.

If you happen to get firefox running, it asked the first time you try a telnet connection from the browser "do you really want to do that?" (paraphrase) say yes. One of the advantages I just found was the ability to create a book mark for the telnet connection in firefox, I just created a random bookmark, went to Organize bookmarks and changed the properties to telnet://twgs.podzone.net and saved it. Now I just used that. I read that IE 7 and higher has telnet from the browser removed. (doesnt matter what OS its on)

Glad you got it going.
