 newbie questions
Hey All,
So I am a newbie as far as experience, I'm missing a lot of the newer techniques of how to get up and running fast. I first played TW in 02' or 03' I think but then never gave it another try. Recently I've been trying to get back into it and I've done a lot of reading but I've got some observations that I would love your opinion on.
First of all, I didn't play with helpers the first time around, from what I can see these days. It's just not possible to compete without them.
next, if you're running mac & win7 like I am, you don't much of a choice outside of swath since twxproxy crashes every 5 mins.
next up, is there much of a point of joining a game that's been running more than a few days, It'll take a few days just for me to get myself a decent planet with some defences and so far that's as far as I've gotten before getting blown up by another player that was most likely trading and bumped into my sector.
or then there is the case of this game I tried today. "UTW:GAME P:"SUBZERO SOLO CHALLENGE: 20K,UNLIMITED:SAT 11/12" all the sectors I tried out of fedspace had 10k to 25k fighters in them and since you can only do so much trading inside of fed space and the initial ship didn't have a long range scanner, this game experience was all of 20 mins or so.
finally I figured playing a game where I can be on a corp (team) might be a good chance for me to actually enjoy playing with others while being protected by more experienced players but I couldn't join because I didn't know how to get the password for any of the corps.
Other than that I love the game, It's a lot more entertaining than COD :P

I have attached a copy of twx 2.05 basically put 2.05 in place of your twx 2.04. Just the proxy. As far as helpers go I use swath for the visual mapping and the chat features. There are many different uses. You can also use zoc if you prefer not to pay for swath. Basic telnet there are public scripts for zoc which you can find online. Also, go to http://www.navhaz.com there is a list of a bunch of twx scripts that are made for the public. They all should run on Version 1.03 and some on Version 2.XX. Hope this helps..

 Re: newbie questions
We are making strides to make TW playable for limited scripting games again. One of the main features added are Delays that discourage scripting, but these settings are unpopular. Settings have also been added that prevent monitoring a time-limit game from outside the game. I highly recommend Cruncher's TWGS, telnet://cruncherstw.dyndns.org/, for games that are more suited to your style of play.

Joining a game that has been running depends on the game settings. You can get into a low turn game that has been running a few days, and many times be competitive. An unlim that is not a truce (or truce is over), is usually next to impossible to get going on after a few hours, but this also depends on the players that are in it. Sounds like the unlim you entered was in the lockdown phase of the end game.

I have known several people that elected to not use helpers/scripts and play completely by hand in a builder game. I know in an all out war type game you would probably not be real successful. In an Unlim Game you would probably be crippled up from carpal tunnel in about 3 hours Best thing is jump in a game and find one style that fits what your looking for, several good servers out there, just takes time to fond one that meets your needs.

 Re: newbie questions
On my server, I have a "Lobby" game just to see if you like the feel of the settings I use. Planets go L5 in one day without resources. Game B - 750 turns - This one is active Game C - 1000 turns - This one is also active I forget how old they are but I would not recommend either of those, these players like the war aspect of the game. Now Game P - Cruncher's Private Game - is 5k turns and I do play, so I have assets to keep the wolves out. Again, same settings and the players here are friendly. This game also has Gold Bubbles - massive 100+ sector bubbles you can block with one gate sector. Just be careful of the ferrengi in all my games, they are fairly aggressive. Get your scanner first! If you need help just hollar!

 Re: newbie questions
Thanks for the responses,
I like the team & social aspect of TW, whether it's a solo game where players interact or a team game where you help each other out, as I said in my initial post I don't know to join corps on games, i'm guessing you'd have to arrange to play with a team before you start playing.
Cruncher's games sound more like the TW that is enjoyable. I mean I've been using swath to worldtrade and colonize planets but I think it kinda defeats the point if the game is about scripts rather than enjoying the prompts yourself. Limited scripting sounds like a mid way point.

I can't find a place to get zoc to give it a try, I really like swath, it seems like i might settle there but it's a bit slow

 Re: newbie questions
www.emtec.com It's a basic telnet helper remember that do basically do anything you will have to use TWX or mombot. Swath has all those built in.

 Re: newbie questions
sticking with swath sounds like a plan then, even if I'm playing with light on the scripting, I like the auto haggle part

 Re: newbie questions
Just make sure if you use Swath & TWX together if you use certain scripts make sure the Auto Helper / Light Bulb is turned off. It will send some command that will have you flying through the universe where it might not be safe A couple scripts I know that do not work well with Auto Helper is anything that makes cash.... worldtrade/SST/SDT are just a couple.

In a tournament, teams are generally decided before the tournament starts. In a casual game though, corps can be formed and disolved at will. You can talk to other players on fedcom, or in the forums and you can ask to join their corp. If they agree, then they will give you the password to join. You can also start your own corporation and invite others to join. Even if you are playing solo, you might form a corp so you can purchase a corporate flagship.

If someone is already running sell-steal (check the player listing for someone with deep red alignment), or the game's been running long enough for people to have level 2 or 3 citadels, or it's hard to move around without hitting people's fighters, I wouldn't bother joining. Quote: finally I figured playing a game where I can be on a corp (team) might be a good chance for me to actually enjoy playing with others while being protected by more experienced players but I couldn't join because I didn't know how to get the password for any of the corps. This is actually the thing holding me back from playing TW more. A few years ago I realized that the best times I ever had gaming were with RL friends... my brothers, and my guildmates from a local WoW guild I organized. I don't enjoy playing games with strangers anymore. Of course this isn't very practical with TW. I have some friends who used to play, but it's not an easy game to jump back into. There are a few players I don't know IRL but whose play style and attitude toward the game I respect. I'd like to corp with them sometime, but that wouldn't leave any good opponents. I kinda miss the days of permacorps. Around '02/'03 I played with a permacorp with a guy called Severian. They weren't, like, elite players... but we had fun.
